Jotham Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Quote In a tragic development during the “world’s biggest gay festival at sea,” a passenger aboard the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, chartered by Atlantis Events, unexpectedly died last week. Atlantis Events specializes in cruise vacations targeted at gay men. The death occurred during the Oasis Caribbean Cruise from January 21 to 28. The cruise originated and concluded in Miami. A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines confirmed the death in a statement to The Advocate. “I can confirm that we had a death onboard and that it was unexpected and not suspicious,” the spokesperson said. The details of the passenger’s death have not been publicly disclosed. Details from a private Facebook group and private chat groups for those on the cruise shed some light on the incident. Atlantis Events cruises feature large-scale circuit party-type dance events, among other entertainment offerings. Drug use at those events is common.
50thStateofMind Posted January 30 Posted January 30 scary, I know many people who went on that cruise... be careful people, test your stuff and don't take anything from strangers
Joyride Posted January 30 Posted January 30 uhm... 2 people? my mind goes to laced drugs or something along those lines. do they not have doctors on board who can issue an official report? 1
305 Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Being on a cruise like that is my biggest nightmare. Circuit parties on land are already putrid, imagine being stuck at sea RIP to him 4
LittleStarmen Posted January 30 Posted January 30 (edited) the rumor is there are 4/5 deaths obviously drugs are so laced nowadays that they are dangerous + the ones that just dodged death due to narcan or luckly woke up Edited January 30 by LittleStarmen
Raver Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Fentanyl laced ecstasy tablet? Plz get your stuff tested yall even on the cruise how were they able to sneak that **** in? May he RIP the title of the article took me out ngl
Dula Peep Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Damn I thought it was only fake prescription pills being laced with Fentanyl now I gotta worry about E too RIP
Redstreak Posted January 30 Posted January 30 I mean stuff like this will just continue and get worse if the community as a whole doesn’t finally grow up 19 18
Wonderland Posted January 30 Posted January 30 How hard is it to get drugs on the ship? I hope this tragedy makes them screen passengers better before they board.

A comment like this is just unhelpful 4 4

I can’t imagine it being that hard. Thousands of passengers…you can’t possibly search every nook and cranny of everyone’s suitcase. 2

Zefierce Posted January 30 Posted January 30 How hard is it NOT to do drugs? Especially during a fentanyl crisis?

dawnettakins Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Gays need to quit and stop with the drugs already fr. It ain't cute at all, and things like this happen. 1

As someone who went on one of these cruises last year, it’s extremely easy. I had several friends bring all kinds of things (weed, poppers, ecstasy) and none of them encountered any resistance. 1
Carla Rosón Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Sounds like the plot of Scream Kings (Chapters game) 1
Just a Gay on ATRL Posted January 30 Posted January 30 I feel like a conversation needs to be had in the LGBT community about excessive drug use and not needing every gay-specific space to have the goal of pushing your body to its absolute limits of tolerance in order to have fun. Also yes sadly more and more stuff seems to be getting laced with fentanyl. The straight community is not removed from this issue either, but I do feel like excessive drug use and putting your body through hell for the sake of going out is particularly normalized in spaces meant for queer entertainment like gay bars, gay cruises, etc. 11

I’ve learned how to be safe over the years but even at my worst I was tame compared to some of the gays out there 1

I’d say your downplaying is far more egregious I think you’re both partly correct and partly incorrect. I would say overdoses affect oppressed communities more than non-oppressed ones. The black community in America, people living in poverty, people suffering from severe disability/mental illness all disproportionately suffer from drug overdoses at higher levels than their non-oppressed counterparts, I’d imagine. It’s not just a gay issue, it’s an oppression issue. 3

In school I had a lecture regarding healthcare of minority groups and the stats show that, all across the board, they’re much more likely to have issues with substance abuse.

But at the same time I would argue that within the gay community, the ones going on these cruises are predominantly very white and very privileged. IMO circuit parties are just raves but gay and with a dark room. If anything it’s rave culture. 2
