Do you think Rihanna prematurely killed the ‘Loud’ era?

She could’ve worked on Loud a few more months, maybe release WFL for a Loud reissue or whatsoever. TTT being released only a year later was absolutely unnecessary

Maybe. She wanted to get out of that Def Jam contract FAST

I would like to see how TT would form if  loud had a reissue

Without thinking of the potential additions of "We Found Love", "You Da One", "Birthday Cake", "Cockiness", and "Where Have You Been" to a "Loud" Deluxe:

I think "Raining Men" would've made a great final single for pop/rhythmic radio in Fall 2011 alongside "Skin" on urban stations, provided they got "yin/yang" visuals that contrasted each other in terms of brightness.

RM? Hannah Lux Davis.

Skin? Nabil Elderkin.

No. She milked LOUD with a bunch of single releases and TTT is a nice pop album overall

She absolutely did, yes, I remember thinking so at the time. Even still, I think Talk That Talk was an unnecessary release. She could have just released a deluxe version of Loud with the best songs from what became Talk That Talk.

I don't think it was prematurely killed.

From what I understand, she was basically recording constantly during the Loud Tour and she/her team probably realized that they had collected enough good songs to release a whole new album rather than a reissue.

Also from a sales point of view, considering she was at peak popstar levels, launching a whole new era maximized her exposure rather than an extension to an existing album.

With WFL as the lead, it was the right choice to make it a new project.

She still released 6 full-fledged singles for that era (OG, WMN, S&M, CKB, MD and Cheers) and RM was also sent to urban radio + LTWYL Pt.II received a high profile live performance. I think the era got what it deserved. Maybe it was cut short a little because she released WFL when Cheers was entering the top 10, but it's not like she neglected the era.

I don't think so. Loud was such a huge moment for Rihanna, a true Rih-naissance. And out of nowhere she ditched 'Cheers' (which wasn't going anywhere on the charts) to drop the incredibly iconic and influential 'We Found Love'.  It was a win right into another win.

When I was younger I felt like it ended prematurely. She/her team began teasing "LoudR" (potential re-release name) and then she just abruptly switched gears to a full fledged album. From that standpoint it was hard to not see it as a more "half baked" Rihanna album.

Not at all. To me it felt like it started with who’s that chick and love the way you lie. Basically when she dyed her hair red all the way to she dyed it brown for WFL

I will say however I thought u da one has never been my cup of tea

Are you guys serious? LOUD was almost 15 years ago :rip: let it go

Now that I think about it, I'm sure she had to contractually promise Calvin Harris to release "We Found Love" as a lead single for her team to secure it as Nicole Scherzinger, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole, Ellie Goulding?, Rita Ora?, and a few other teams were also competing for the song.

So... no. She needed to end the era when she did to secure some of these "Talk That Talk" songs on a new project with peak attention, instead of relegation to a deluxe version.

Also, based on what we saw with Demi Lovato's "Break A Sweat", Dr. Luke was making labels/artists sign agreements at the time to make certain Luke productions lead, second, and third singles. Rih may not have secured "Where Have You Been" or "You Da One" either.

Perhaps, but the new era gave us We Found Love, which undoubtedly locked Rihanna in as one of the biggest global hitmakers of all time.

That's just kinda how the cookie crumbled. I doubt "LoudR" would have been more successful than TTT anyway.

wasn't Talk That Talk actually Loud deluxe?

Eras last sooo long nowadays because hit songs have a much longer shelf life on the charts, so it feels crazy by today's standard that she released Only Girl, What's My Name, Raining Men, S&M, California King Bed, Man Down, and Cheers (Drink to That) all as hit singles around the worldwith their independent chart runs in the space of 13 months :rip: But back then that was the norm, you'd release a new single every two to three months

Horrible album sales from TTT, so if she had a reissue with Loud it would’ve made that album cross 10M pure easily

WFL and WHYB along with most of TTT didn’t fit loud, TTT was a grittier sound so deserved a new era. Mama was also over the red wig atp

7 out of 11 tracks from Loud were singles, which is one less than Teenage Dream. The other 3 songs are not single worthy, yes even Fading. The latter singles didn’t do that well so that’s why they moved on to a new album. Hat she could’ve done is waited a year and made a great album instead of releasing the messy TTT and Unapologetic.

This too. Loud had a vibrant dance pop sound while TTT was more EDM and British if that makes sense

maybe not overall, but at the time, it felt incredibly awkward how Cheers was basically killed and then all of a sudden a BRAND NEW ALBUM was coming out.  Everyone was like wtf!? Zero break in between eras.

No. Loud was doing what it needed to do and it's superior follow up TTT deserved a moment in the light! :clap3:

Loud is one of the few examples of an album where all the singles were chosen flawlessly and only the mid-to-filler tracks were left, so no I don't think there was anything more to squeeze from that grape. She did what she needed to do :giraffe:
