No one touched her She made dance music viable until da death of disco and we would have to wait almost 4 years before da likes of Shannon and Madonna would make it viable again I really think Bad Girls was the first major pop girl era. Then Madonna in 1983 expanded on this with her debut. By 1986-1987 the modern main pop girl era was here. True Blue and Control had multiple singles that each had their own music video, single cover, along with major televised performances. 4
Reverse Warholian Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) In terms of peak years, she and Irene Cara are massively underrated. Queens Edited January 23 by Reverse Warholian

AxelFox Posted January 23 Posted January 23 A true trailblazer in music! I too feel she doesn't get the flowers she deserves nowadays. Hopefully they do a beautiful tribute for her at the Grammys this year. As some have already pointed out, much of the dance music we have fallen in love with over the decades stems directly from her work with Giorgio Moroder. 3
brenda-walsh Posted January 23 Posted January 23 i was just listening to the Bad Girls album today! Donna is super underrated and doesn't get nearly the amount of recognition she deserves, she really paved the way for the popgirls in the 80s to become megastars and hit the sweet spot from the mid 70s to early 80s. Also missing from OP, she was extremely global too. Chartmasters did some posts about the biggest selling artists in the 70s in places like Italy and Mexico, and she was consistently on every list
blown away Posted January 23 Posted January 23 One of the most impressive hit streaks, not only success wise but also quality wise. These songs have stood the test of time really well. Donna truly was a beast. 4
Soda Pop Queen Posted January 23 Posted January 23 3 hours ago, Cheers said: I had no idea Donna came before Tina and Madge omfg. For some reason I thought they were peers. Her music has aged so well! well technically, Tina had been around first with Ike Turner since the late 50s/early 60s but Donna's prime does pre-date Tina's solo commercial prime years in the 80s.

Yeah that makes sense. I too was a bit surprised a few years ago when I saw it was "only" 3x platinum. Like others said, the first female album to cross 5x Platinum was Like a Virgin and that wasn't until 1985.

Barbra ran to make a hit with her cause she knew where the radio listeners were That's right Barbra knew better than to serve opp to Mrs. Donna. I feel love is HEAVEN. and HEAVEN ON EARTH by Britney Spears is the best homage interpolation I've heard to pay respect to the legend. I feel love, She works hard for the money, Enough is Enough shows versatility As a tot, I remember Dinner with Gerswhin ha visual and it was so unique to me. I still have that song on my playlist. I'm not even going to discuss the masterpiece Love to love you baby (17 minute version) as it is overdiscussed and she has plenty of other songs that need more praise.
readytowind Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) https://youtu.be/p1kPkCOXE2c?si=OsKFpxlSALlir62A I love Donna. Her MacArthur park is the greatest pop song. It's like a 3 movement symphony in pop. Her vocal is so underestimated. For me, MacArthur park performance puts her above Whitney and other vocalists. She's the greatest vocalist to me. Nothing beats her vocal in 79 MacArthur park live. https://youtu.be/p1kPkCOXE2c?si=OsKFpxlSALlir62A Edited January 23 by readytowind
Graves Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Bad Girls, Once Upon a Time, and hell, throw in Four Seasons of Love too. Three of the best disco albums of all time. A genre known for great singles and terrible albums, yet Donna was putting out cohesive, exciting and quality 16-track albums. Legend, icon, blueprint. I have a lot of respect for all of the pre-Madonna pop girls like Cher, Diana, Barbra... but none of them did it quite like Donna. 1
DammnBaby Posted January 24 Posted January 24 (edited) Bad Girls was the first MPG concept album, and the first MPG album with a TV special (The Donna Summer Special). Edited January 24 by DammnBaby

Relampago. Posted January 24 Posted January 24 The way her impact is still clearly visible, especially in the 2020s. And even then, her tracks aged so well and are still aging better than a lot of attempts today.
