ohwow Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) side 4 of bad girls (album) is still fresh today let's talk about that as well Edited January 23 by ohwow 10
WEEKND Posted January 23 Posted January 23 That doesn’t sound massive to me are any of those albums diamond or at least 5x platinum whitney’s first two albums now that’s what’s I would call a massive peak. Love Donna but Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Shania, Rihanna, Taylor, Madonna & Janet all have had more impressive 3/4 year run 1 5 6

This thread was about giving praise to an underated but iconic peak for a black pop girl. Not a competition. We really don't talk about her enough on here. Bad girls sold 10m globally according to Chartmasters Quote In total, the era is responsible for nearly 10 million equivalent album sales. https://chartmasters.org/yearly-most-successful-female-album-the-beginning-1960-1982/19/ 6 1

Women like Madonna, Whitney, Mariah and Janet came up in an era where women were JUST starting to sell like their superstar male counterparts. Donna was a BIG deal in her era. 22 3

Donna set the stage so they could shine and achieve greater heights. this was and still is a huge moment for a Black artist who revolutionized music. the girls are able to do disco because of the ‘Bad Girls’ album 2 1

Albums especially albums by female artists didn't sell like that back then. Like a Virgin was the first female album to cross 5,000,000 units in America and it didn't happen until 1985. 4 2

This is the same forum who raves when pop girls have a single that barely scrapes the top 10, but will call Donna Summer's peak underwhelming Female album sales were not massive prior to 1983, so her being from the 70s and black yet achieving two albums in the YE top 10 is a huge deal. She's probably a handful of artist period who have achieved that. 1
Gov Hooka Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Her and Giorgio Morodor made magic. I still can’t believe I feel Love came out in 1976, and every house, techno, progressive, trance, etc. DJ is still playing iterations of it today and making dance floors pop off… 8 2

This is before MTV so no music videos. She is a woman. She is a black woman. So for her to reach massive success like this for back then is an accomplishment. No other person besides Diana Ross was doing it like her when it came to Billboard Chart success. So for her time, that was massive … OT: Those number ones she had were on top for several weeks as well. She had 2 singles in the top 3 with Hot Stuff and Bad Girls. She even blocked herself from number 1 with No More Tears and Dim All The Lights. All of this in the same year. 1979 was her year for sure! Not to mention the massive chart success she achieved before and after her peak. Donna was such a huge star! All of this before MTV! 2

Also the hot 100 YEC in 1979 #2 Bad girls #7 Hot stuff #12 MacArthur park #39 Heaven knows
GreatestLoveofAll Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Donna had all the OG girls a little rattled iktr! Barbra ran to make a hit with her cause she knew where the radio listeners were 1 1
fememeist Posted January 23 Posted January 23 She deserved a Private Dancer moment in the 80s like Tina too 4
Harsh2256 Posted January 23 Posted January 23 The hits were global and the vocals and production were on point. I was shocked when I knew she also was heavily involved in the creation of her songs. Such peaks were totally rare for most female singer at the time
DammnBaby Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) Yes, Donna's peak was massive. And she is a spectacular and visionary artist. All the dance music we enjoy and take for granted today stems from her. Edited January 23 by DammnBaby 3 2

No one touched her She made dance music viable until da death of disco and we would have to wait almost 4 years before da likes of Shannon and Madonna would make it viable again

Cheers Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I had no idea Donna came before Tina and Madge omfg. For some reason I thought they were peers. Her music has aged so well!
