You can’t escape it on social media which is why I deleted my accounts 5 years ago and haven’t been back since. I used to love Twitter, but the bad started outweighing the good. ... girlie, tabloids were WILD. they intentionally degraded regular women. they intentionally villified queer people. And there was NO escape, unless you were part of an entirely secluded industry like STEM, where none of your colleagues care about that stuff either. Unless none of your colleagues care, you don't listen to the radio and you don't watch TV, you were gonna see this. It was national news worldwide when Britney shaved her head. That would never fly today. You turned on the radio and they were complaining about Madonna. You looked at a billboard and it was telling you to fix your ugly face with dieting tips. You talked about celebrities at the dinner table, and you'd have your parents completely villify these regular people for their artistry... And back then, there was no online for you to go to, to escape from all of that. It had been like this since the old days of hollywood. You can say that you prefer it now, but at the end of the day you're on a pop forum, so if you like pop music now, back then you'd have a harder time. There's no sugar coating that. They were telling Britney to kill herself on TV. Social media has done so much to counterbalance this in the past 15 years. Respecting women, queer representation, POC representation, working standards, I mean really objectively it's so much better thanks to social media in particular. Social media didn't just appear as this evil thing. It replaced its evil counterparts and gave good benefits with it. From an individualistic perspective I can see where you're coming from, but from like a societal point of view, social media has really done positive things 1
