NoOneDiesFromLove Posted January 11 Posted January 11 My hate for musicals aside, that does NOT look good

Wonka just made 600M. People like a musical but you have to make the right music for the audience of the movie. Barbie used last minute i'm Just Ken scene to promote the movie cause It was the kind of thing people wanted from that movie. As Billie eilish songs or Charlie xcx. The greatest showman has the perfect music you want from that and had Crazy legs. This Is means girls, people don't want music sounds like Disney

I think it’s because recent well-received musicals like “West Side Story” or “In the Heights” flopping. So now Hollywood is trying to fool audiences and hiding their films are musicals. Wonka, The Color Purple and Mean Girls are examples of this. And with Wonka’s success I doubt they’re going to change this marketing strategy anytime soon. 2
dawnettakins Posted January 11 Posted January 11 I mean I would have too tbh Glad I was never interested to see this mess as I knew it would be.
JoJo Posted January 11 Posted January 11 The problem is that the Mean Girls musical is not a good musical in general. There’s a reason why the Heathers off-Broadway musical has a cult following and Mean Girls doesn’t 2 1

I don't understand why people are actively wanting a genre of entertainment to evaporate because they're not personally a fan of it. I can't stand horror films, but I'd never want that genre to disappear because I don't want to watch them. You think musicals are corny? Cool. Don't go and watch them. It's really not that difficutl. 12

XIAN Posted January 11 Posted January 11 34 minutes ago, vuelve88 said: The advertising is super deceptive, since they had every opportunity to show a music number, but intentionally left it out. i did see a trailer have renee singing "my name is regina george" and a dance number in the hallway 27 minutes ago, Blade Runner said: That's what the producers DESERVE! Worst marketing ever. The way not even the posters said this was a musical. Yikes. the poster only has a musical note in the mean girls logo
Mitsouko Posted January 11 Posted January 11 I can't believe they didn't know how to sell this movie Such an OBVIOUS blunder 1

Movies from a particular genre flopping doesn’t mean that audiences aren’t interested in that genre as a whole. For every successful horror or comedy, there’s a lot more that will underperform. I also had no idea West Side Story and In The Heights were recent movies, so maybe lack of promotion was also to blame. 1

vale9001 Posted January 11 Author Posted January 11 (edited) I think actually with the right marketing as I said a mean girls musical could have worked very well especially for being a musical. Just need music gen Z could like, a soundtrack made by all the gen Z streaming stars, actors gen Z loves etc.. But let's not forget this was supposed to be just a Paramount plus exclusive, so basically a TV movie. And whatever It makes It's something more for them. And also for exhibitors since january and february are gonna be two very weak months. It went to theaters because of the strike and movies that were postponed (and also cause they saw how big Barbie was). Edited January 11 by vale9001 1

Tell that to hollywood I remember Spielberg’s West Side Story had a lot of promo. They really wanted it to be the “the greatest showman” of that year. 1
Happylittlepunk Posted January 11 Posted January 11 (edited) I can’t believe Tina Fay said yes to this instead of og casted mean girls 2. Just like that Walmart commercial. Edited January 11 by Happylittlepunk
period sis Posted January 11 Posted January 11 There was literally singing and dancing in the trailer If you didn't know it was a musical that's your fault lol 2 1

Just you need the right music and the right style for a target. I think joker is gonna have a kind of music and musical scenes the audience of that movie can like. I'm expecting rock music and scenes are like psychedelics and a tribute to 70s music like led Zeppelin, the doors etc . I don't think Warner is dumb on that. They know what is the target.
