Mainly due to a lot of it being fairly mellow, along the lines of the back half of that album. Lyrically, it reminds me of aspects of Thank U, Next and Sweetener. It’s personal, but like she described in the Zach Sang interview, not every song is a clear in-your-face rebuttal to the stories about her personal life. Production-wise, it’s varied, but settles in a space that is most comparable to the back half of Sweetener and even hints of Positions, but it’s not nearly as R&B. The more uptempo moments don’t fit nicely with any of her previous albums, which is fun (but I think that’s clear from yes, and? alone). Plus there's always beauty in "underperforming" eras that have plenty of gems. It's gold for the future generation of pop stans. Plus it's not 2014 anymore. She doesn't need to perform Problem 14 times in a week to get attention. She can have a moderate charting song, then a smash with the most random songs on the album thanks to TikTok users.... Spoiler I do kinda want one track with a BIG POP CHORUS but "mellow pop" gives me more Better Off/Goodnight N Go rather than No Tears/Breathin as well. The "back half of Sweetener" is a win in itself so I'll be satisfied anyway. Our poor wigs if she really serves another 90s house inspired bop. 2 1
