Natalie Portman exposed for hypocrisy; Nicole Kidman praised. Thoughts?

Film Twitter argues that Natalie Portman's advocacy for female directors may appear hypocritical, as she has not collaborated with a female director since expressing concern about the lack of women nominated for Best Director. This apparent disparity raises questions about the alignment of her words with her actions in promoting gender diversity in the film industry. In contrast, Nicole Kidman has garnered praise for actively working with female directors, earning appreciation from the public for her commitment to fostering inclusivity in the cinematic landscape. The contrasting choices of these two prominent actresses underscore the complexities within Hollywood's efforts to address gender imbalances.

Rose McGowan might've made some points about Miss Portman.

I don’t think it’s hypocrisy if she didn’t make the commitment Nicole did, but yes, if she’s going to complain about something, she likely should contribute to its remedy.

Natalie's next project will be directed by a woman though.

So we're blaming a woman (who is also a female director, mind you) for Hollywood's shortage of female directors instead of going to the real source of the problem

And they purposely put movies considering she just worked with Alma Har'el for television

Natalia has spoken against zionism and Israeli occupation. There is a reason, the Israeli government mainly Benji hates her. I think you are mistaking her for Gal Gadot.

Literally who here is blaming women for Hollywood's shortage of female directors?

All I see people pointing out hypocrisy and performance activism.

Her own production company doesn't work with female directors though so she is contributing to the problem.

It was a joke. Was it even a joke? She simply stated a fact. That shouldn’t offend anybody. Is she suddenly expected to be a champion for women’s rights because of one comment?

It’s moot regardless because she’s pointing out the lack of female NOMINEES not the lack of female directors.

And yet now Natalie is being blamed for the lack of progress. Figures.

my understanding is that she’s criticized israel in the past. however, as far as i can see on her platforms she’s been silent about the ongoing genocide since the events of october 7th aside from her plea to free israeli hostages.

And she's literally addressed this before. It's not hypocrisy to point out that the opportunities are limited.

“It is true I’ve only made a few films with women,” Portman’s statement continues (via Variety), “In my long career, I’ve only gotten the chance to work with female directors a few times — I’ve made shorts, commercials, music videos and features with Marya Cohen, Mira Nair, Rebecca Zlotowski, Anna Rose Holmer, Sofia Coppola, Shirin Neshat, and myself. Unfortunately, the unmade films I have tried to make are a ghost history. I have had the experience a few times of helping get female directors hired on projects which they were then forced out of because of the conditions they faced at work. So I want to say, I have tried, and I will keep trying. While I have not yet been successful, I am hopeful that we are stepping into a new day.”

Could she do even more? Sure, you have people like Dunst who continually work with new female directors but that doesn't negate Portman's statement or the attempts she's made we don't even know about.

and if she did everyone would call it performative, so then what...

And this isn't even true. Her production company was founded in 2021 and it has already produced work with two female directors for television series.

The only other projects it has co-produced are a music video Natalie directed and May December.

I don’t think Natalie has been doing too many movies lately. One of the more recent ones was Thor 4 but aside from that… how many projects has she been attached to? Don’t get me wrong, if she’s going to bring it up she should try to stand behind it. That said, I thought she was starting a family and therefore taking convenient roles for her - meaning she took the roles that were offered that fit her schedule and not ones that she shopped around for. She can simultaneously point out the shortage of female directors and still do the jobs that were best for her at that moment.

They always have. It's the main way to "get away" with antisemitism because you can't call someone a jew to insult him again (yet)

None of them actually care that much. Nicole will work with whoever is interesting to further her career. When she needed to be in a "marriage" to Scientolgist Tom Cruise to start her American career, she did for a decade. When there were cool, edgy directors, she worked with them, male or female. Even back in the '90s she worked with Jane Campion but only after The Piano. When Harvey Weinstein was top dog, almost all her projects were with him. Which is to say she's no saint either. It's about what benefits her. That's true of every megastar. I know Gay Film Twitter loves Nicole but this is the woman who said "we need to support Trump."
