Taylor is still lightyears away from overtaking Oscar-nominee Rihanna as the second best selling female artist. Despite constant re-recordings and re-releases. And Rihanna being inactive since the Obama administration.

Daddy Swift really put in the WORK. Like father like daughter I guess. He doesn't just hand out guitar picks at Taylor's shows, he been greasing them wheels behind the scenes.

Hope he's enjoying his retirement, he's earned it. I guess he is since he shows up at every one of his daughter's concerts.

As nutty as he sounds, he does detail all the money and work it took to launch a young Taylor Swift like that.

It's quite impressive.

Correction - Taylor Swift was not 'discovered', she was planted. Her music was peddled to every single influential connection Scott knew and he rigged her album sales so that she would get airplay. Did you not read his email?

"Rigged her album sales"?  I'm assuming you're the one who didn't read the email.  Also, I wasn't aware that hustling and putting her out there is equivalent to "planted".

Do you want me to apologize to you that my fave is invested in making music and enjoys the process and hence releases it while yours is more interested in deciding which shades of bronzer to put on sale for Christmas or how many of each size of panty to order from the factory? I'm sorry your fave isn't an active musician anymore, but trying to denigrate the statistical success of an artist who actually gives a **** about her musical career because Rihanna hasn't stepped foot in a studio in almost a decade is just laughable.

He's where she got her lyrical flair from because that could've been on evermore :deadbanana4:

Having wealthy parents does not make you an "industry plant" get a GRIP :deadbanana:

Just gives you a leg up. We can go into a whole round of discourse on why that part is problematic but let's not act like Taylor didn't want this from the get and hustled hard to create meaningful and resonant music.

The way we're like, two years out from people getting cancelled for growing up with more money than others.

Okay so first I really need you to know that the post that said that wasn’t actually real and it’s not in the email lmao, like the entire thing is about him doing things for her career like blowing balloons and collecting rubber ducks

:rip:

The actual email:

  • My goal in this e-mail is for you to have a better perspective of how much I do, how much I have bankrolled you two (...)
  • I am going to do anything that I think is appropriate to do to advance Taylor's career.
  • Who on the board of directors (of the Reading Phillies a baseball team) suggested Oldies Day? I did.
  • Who had promoted his 11 year old at every board meeting to the point that when the guy who was supposed to sing the national anthem did not show, they came to Taylor and said "Can you sing the national anthem?". I did.
  •  Who then made copies and used old contacts to send it to the 76ers, while being told he was silly. I did.
  • Who bought tickets for all of Taylor's friends to go support her when she sang in front of 23,000 fans. I did.
  • Who has made every single client (see note*) listen to Taylor's latest song before we went over their financial plan? Knoebels Grove, Bloomsburg Fair, Boy Scout Dinners, Chamber dinners. Took heat for all of it but it was part of the process.
  • Who then sent the 76ers tape to his attorney (all the time being goofed on) who was the president of the USTA.
  • Who has made enough money that if we have to take off across the country, we will be okay?
  • I invite Scott Sanford out to the lake. We do not talk about Taylor. He wants to see the lake. He sees our jet skis. He wants us to corral ducks for Nashville's Duck Drop. I agree to corral ducks if he lets Taylor be the talent at Riverfront Park for the Duck Drop.
  • That week the band ran up a $3000 bill for practice. Fired Jamey. But her performance was good for her and created some buzz. Big effort. Yeah. Worth it.
  • I connect with Bill Anderson. (Legendary country musician) Taylor does his fan fair show.
  • Keep in mind that I helped Bill in 1980 in Reading, I sold my $10,000 dock to him for $5000 last year knowing full well how much he can help me over the years
  • Bill is signed to Sony ATV and RCA. He was talking up Taylor all over the place.
  • I call a reporter at the City Paper, explain that I used to be a reporter, stringer for the Associated Press and the Philadelphia Bulletin and I have a daughter who is a freshman at Hendersonville High School who is hanging in every Abercrombie and Fitch store and it might be a good article.
  • How did we get the Blue Bird? I stay in touch with Rob (who I think is one reason she got the Sony deal, they listened to the production, went to the website and listened to Taylor in person, loved that you were her manager).
  • There is in excess of $150,000 of hard dollars spend on travel lessons, production ($29,000 not counting duplication), website (not too many artists come with a website like ours) and I know that is not the total value. The expense has been over $200,000

*Note the "clients" in question (from his own words):

"Keep in mind that I manage $270 million but more importantly, 249 relationships with families at Merrill in a terrible market. My clients averaged 17.4% in a market when the rest of the complex averaged 3-8%. I am in the top 1% of all brokers at the most prestigious investment firm in the world."

The entire thing is about him bankrolling her career in a way that 99.99% of people can't even dream of. By his own calculations, by the time she was 15 (May 2005, when he sent the email) he had spent over 200,000 dollars, the sheer amount of contacts he names, and he explains point by point how every opportunity she had came from him networking and sinking money. She hadn't even started going on the road properly at this point, according to this same email.

Anyone who says she doesn't have talent or is only where she is because of her dad is being obtuse 100% because if it was that easy, every rich kid would be the most famous popstar on the planet. Her dad provided the opportunities, she brought something to the table to back those opportunities up and do something with then.

But framing this email as "he talks about blowing up balloons and gathering rubber ducks" is soooooooooooo misleading and, frankly, kinda weird??

So anyway you can completely disregard that I was responding to someone following a literal actual lie that he bought copies of her album to kickstart her career, like if you really want to, but okay! I already get that he did what he could to help her in other ways (I DID read the email, hence knowing that what they were talking about wasn’t in it). But we don’t have to lie about it, we don’t have to talk about her being so untalented like that poster believes, and we don’t need to pretend his efforts are the sole reason for her success. That’s all! Super sorry you assumed that was me “misleading” someone who was, um, actively lying and injecting their intensely negative opinions of Taylor Swift into the discussion.

Everything told in that Behind The Music was such a lie. They made out like everything was down to luck and chance and she had overcome so much. Pretty embarrassing. She's lucky she's the only bankable star left because she would have been ripped to shreds had this come out earlier. Look at how it's been spun in the media already.

So much about making it because of her amazing, unique, personal music. It was her dads money all along. It's all so gross.

So your problem was that he literally didn't physically buy 30k copies of her album but used his connections and significant fortune (over 200k, in the vicinity of 100k cds then) in every other conceivable way to give a leg up to his daughter? Wow, talk about misrepresenting.

Why are some of yall acting brand new? This info is nothing new. Her father has always been known for how dedicated he was to Taylor. You think a family who moved half a country for their kid's aspiration is not this supportive?

Thank god he's not abusive and made his kids developed body dysmorphia and bleached their own skin, or trapped their own kids in a conservatorship. But maybe that's why some of yall stay real mad about this. Embarrassing...

Not the disingenuous theatrics about “misrepresenting” from someone who, again, did not bother to read the email and assumed a literal lie from a trolling comment was real, then used it as part of their basis for trying to shade her. :rip:

Also albums don’t cost $2 so $200k ≠ 100k CDs - and besides, what kind of conversion rate is that, anyway? “He guesstimated that he’d spent over $200k to help his child via lessons, production, travel, and a website in an unhinged, likely drunken rant, and that’s basically the same as fraudulently mass-buying 100k copies of her album!” Were we ever actually going to have a serious conversation here, or not?

1. She is coming from an upper-middle class family and her father is a rich bank investor

2. Her family loves her and being supportive to her career. Their whole family moved to Nashville to help her start her career. Her father even participated in the establishment of Big Machine and she is the first artist (and only successful one) from that label

Literally nothing new here cause we already knew everything, it’s in her wiki’s page. Everything leaked here is just adding more details to the whole story but there is nothing astonishing or interesting. And I never saw anyone anywhere outside this ATRL thread talking about this cause this is a boring story. No one cares how her father spend $100000 to advertise her cause every label spent money to promoted artists that they think are worthy and there is no difference here

We have already known that her family was supportive to her career and what’s your problem with that? Do you think any other artists who signed with big label didn’t get much bigger promotion? I would rather signed with Republic/Columbia than signed with Big Machine with a rich father :rip: Or do you think her father’s power is bigger than a mature labels like Republic?
