Madonna's first 15 years were debut to Ray of Light, literally some of the most iconic and memorable albums in pop music ever. Gaga's career collapsed after 3 years and she had to turn to acting and ballads appealing to republicans to stay relevant. Some cute bops 2008-2011 but she ran out of ideas and now she basically pretends she was never a popstar. As for sales, others have mentioned them. Madonna will make more than double the gross of her quick little 20 date tour NOW, 40 years into her career after a supposed Gaga repeak with the already forgotten Chromatica.

ITs very Bey vs Taylor, so unless people were actually of that age group and alive to feel the currency or immediate impact they tend to underrate it.

 

Madonna was massive, as was WHITNEY during that entire time, but Madonna did become 4th place to Mariah/Whitney/Celine during an era or two and thats fine, Beyonce also has been 4th to Tay/Adele/Katy at points and she still remained the most consistent and has been like Madonna for over 20 years. They are legends for a reason!
