Normally they can be spotted with several award nominations at the Mercury prize or the Brits without any hits to their name. Or they get one random hit out of nowhere and fade into oblivion. Cat Burns and Holly Humberstone are the latest that come to mind. industry support =/= industry plant also not sure how cat could even be in this conversation since go was the definition of organic that took years to grow into a hit
Freaky Prince Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Those ‘hello christ im bout to sin again’ girlies, I cackled at their monthly listeners and the streams of that song

nadiamendell Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 You realize all famous pop stars are "industry plants", right? This was even more so the case in the past when a record label would take someone unknown and build their image/career from scratch. Nowadays most stars have to build their own fanbase first before getting signed, with some rare exceptions. "Industry plant" is such a stupid term.

Nowadays most stars have to build their own fanbase first before getting signed, with some rare exceptions. "Industry plant" is such a stupid term. People seem to think that a record label doing their job = industry plant. This term originated amongst hiphop/rap fans to refer to artists that had a “self made” act going on while being backed up by big labels — and the whole thing become popular when Chance the Rapper debuted and there was a lot of discourse about him. Gayle is a great example of an industry plant trying to come off as an organic act who went viral on Tiktok when in reality everything was planned. Olivia Rodrigo, for example, never really hid the fact that she was signed, so accusing her of being a plant makes no sense. Also, being a plant doesn’t necessarily need to be a negative thing, like, WHO CARES??
JoeAg Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 if Olivia is an industry plant then so are *deep inhale* Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Bridgit Mendler, Hilary Duff, Aly & AJ, Zendaya, Dove Cameron… nah, she’s no industry plant. she’s an ex-act just like many before her 1

Zefierce Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Everyone who is on top is an industry plant. Even artists like Gaga who the industry latched onto in 2008/2009 was given the best of the best in terms of producers/stylists/art directors/makeup artists/radio airtime/etc. She was basically worked to the bone and given all the attention for the financial payoff for music execs. (which she admits) But there's a difference between talented passionate artists who become industry plants and.... Ice Spice.
