The OP @Gorjesspazze9 is extremely misleading. What this tells us is that Disney spent the most money. To have any real meaning, we should see the net profit instead.

And by the way, the year is not over yet. It is very likely that Universal is going to overtake Disney in the remaining 4 days thanks to Migration and Trolls 3 doing well, so they will probably not even have that.

To be fair, the OP is discussing the domestic box office. The Variety tweet is in reference to the global box office.

This shows you they’re way too big for their own good. I hope they have another “bad” year next year - their content has gotten lazy, treatment of employees has declined, and theme parks worse. Had a friend tell me recently who went to Magic Kingdom they were trying to charge people extra to see the fireworks at the end of the night and it cost nearly as much as a day at the park.
