WhoWho Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 When I ask myself if a coup d’état is possible in my country in the current political climate, the answer is 100% yes. And I’m surprised that it hasn’t happened yet. Is it possible in your country?
Sweeftie13 Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 I come from Italy and I believe that our armed forces have reduced power, after the Second World War our country was "de-militarized" and the division of judicial, parliamentary and governmental power is so strong and respected that a coup military state would fail even before it was born. This is one of the few positive things about Italian politics, I hope that in all countries in the world the decision-making weight of the military is reduced to a minimum just to guarantee the security of the republic

Gelato Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 No. UK army is only 75k + 25k reserves. There are probably lots of right-wing weirdos among them but any attempt would never gain support considering Labour has a 20 point lead in the polls right now.
.Odyssey. Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 No, I live in the US, we are a democracy and freedom fighters 1
Happylittlepunk Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 (edited) Nope we have the strongest military and is extremely disciplined. Plus we have some of the loyal citizens in the world part of our military here in the US. Edited December 21, 2023 by Happylittlepunk

I also see this as quite difficult, they certainly have a better chance than the military thanks to the control they have due to security issues, but luckily the Italian secret services are only interested in retiring at 50yo
Mr.X Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Well Portugal is pretty much consistently licking USA and UK boot and the amount of corruption and power from those two countries in Portugal makes it pretty easy to imagine. The US has military bases in Portugal and the CIA was instrumental at keeping the the fascist Caetano dictatorship until 1974 and then installing the elite-power after the civil revolution in 1975, with threats of milliraty action. Just a couple of months ago, a US-funded soft power project that seeks to exploit Lithium reserves in Portugal brought the government down. Whole areas of the country are basically UK-USA colonies for the super rich, such as Lisboa and Quinta do Lago in Algarve. Make that what you will.

Mr.X Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Just now, Tropez said: So karma for what they did historically to other countries and starting the slave trade Oh yes for sure but I wouldnt be so smart ass about it, specially since we are here debating a possible military coup. Who do you think would enforce such a thing today? Also the UK and the USA can ******* talk about historical slave trades and colonialism... The USA literally supported the fascist Portuguese dictatorship stronghold of the colonies into 1974. Both the UK and the USA continue the colonialism and military stronghold in the countries to this day, both literally enforcing corruption, genocides and military coups all over the world. The UK itself has over 100 'commonwealth' countries of which the ******* UK kind is head of state. Portugal has none of that (thank people and the civil wars who overthrew the dictatorship in 1974).
Bubble Tea Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 No, New Zealand's defense force is tiny.
popmusicisdead Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 they tried it once in the early 2000's and it was a flop.

Googling upd: just kidding, there's been like 50 failed coups in the early 2000's so there's no chance I'll ever be able to guess the correct country Edited December 21, 2023 by WhoWho
DAP Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Feels like if anyone were to undertake a coup in the US and succeed, it’d be the military. What that would look like I don’t know but I don’t rule it out happening in our lifetimes if living conditions get more desperate.
AMIT Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 the answer is yes for every single country, with varying degrees of probability of course. 1
