The end of “August,” the strings and twangy guitar — that was one where it was really in my head, production-wise, for a long time. The end has to be so euphoric. She’s talking about, like, “Meet me behind the mall” and “Back when we were living for the hope of it all.” I kept attaching to all of her lyrics and being like, This crescendo at the end has to feel like all of that, on fire.

On these sorts of tracks it really does go to show how good of a producer Jack can be. Emphasising on that “can be”. The majority of Melodrama and sprinkles of his work with Taylor (namely Reputation and Folklore) do show some of his great skills. But truthfully his production on many of the Midnights songs and the Taylor re-records have often felt a bit lifeless. You win some and you lose some.

Ugh the outros of Hard Feelings and August are sublime, he didn’t lie. When he’s on he’s really on.
