  1. 1. Does your fav have a riskier lead than Frozen?

    • Yes and it smashed harder than Frozen on the charts
    • Yes but it didn't smash as hard as Frozen on the charts
    • No - my fav didn't release a risky lead on par with Frozen

And if so, did it smash just as hard as Frozen did? (#2 on the US Hot 100, #2 on the European Hot 100 for 11 weeks behind Celine's "My Heart Will Go On", 5th biggest smash of Europe of 1998, #1 UK smash)

Random but did All Saints sample this on their song ‘Pure Shores’ ?

I was a teenager when Frozen came out. It was great but hardly risky. At the time, female pop artists were being pushed into avant-garde and suggestive sound palettes with elements of trance and world music, if they didn't naturally lend themselves to the singer-songwriter vibe. It's a really well accomplished song but it wasn't too far removed from what Kylie Minogue, All Saints, Annie Lennox, etc. were doing at the time. :coffee2:

Actual risk that didn't pay off at the time. Kylie walked so Madonna could run.

How is Frozen risky? It sounds like a hit straight away.

Also before releasing RoL, Madonna was at the lowest point of her career after Erotica and Bedtime Stories underperformed and alienated most of the GP, so it’s not like it was a risky move either.

No, but it's produced by the same producer.

None of these were mainstream artists with thriving careers in North America, South America and Asia. Madonna definitely had a lot more to lose and was more at the forefront for a lot more countries.

Although it wasn't as big as Frozen was, it was still a decent hit.

Dirrty and Accelerate, although Dirrty was bigger in the UK than Frozen. Was it worth it? Hell yeah, these are her two best lead singles

Going from material girl and into the groove to Live To Tell is as risky as this back in the 80s but okay

If she already had a thriving career, what would she have to lose? The bigger you are, the better you can endure flops, unlike smaller acts who get promptly dropped if they underperform.

Your label relies on you more heavily when you’re a flagship artist. Kylie Minogue bombing in the U.S. is no different than Carly Rae Jepsen bombing - it’s expected and the label plans for it. But a major artist like Madonna bombing would put the label in shambles.
