Nepal Registers First Same-Sex Marriage – The Diplomat

Quote

On November 29, Nepal registered its first same-sex marriage between Ram Bahadur (Maya) Gurung and Surendra Pandey. With this, the country has become the second in Asia — after Taiwan — to formally register a same-sex marriage.

...

In 2007, Nepal’s Supreme Court ordered the government to recognize a third gender category, audit all laws that discriminate against LGBT people, and form a committee to study legal recognition of same-sex relationships. By 2010, the Election Commission and immigration forms added the option of “other” in addition to male and female, legally recognizing a third gender category. In 2011, Nepal became the first country globally to include a third gender in its census. Nepal started issuing passports that recognized the third gender in 2015. The Constitution of Nepal, 2015 protects sexual minorities.

Quote

Thailand’s cabinet recently approved a bill that would legalize same-sex weddings. The amendment to the country’s laws will be submitted to the parliament this month.

The amendment to the Civil and Commercial Code will change the words “men and women” and “husband and wife” to “individuals” and “marriage partners.” The next step will be an amendment to the country’s pension fund law to recognize same-sex couples.

Sometimes I think about how when I was born it wasn't legal anywhere in the world for gay people to get married and now 35 countries have marriage equality. With all the terrible tings going on in the world it's nice to take a step back and appreciate progress like that

I remember when my country (Ireland) became the first country in the world to legalise same sex marriage by popular vote in 2015. I hope to see more progress in this regard from other countries.

Which was surprising (in a good way) from a majority Catholic country. Just goes to show how much attitudes have changed in recent years

In Indonesia, the Washington-based nonprofit think tank interviewed about 950 adults in person. Indonesia recorded the largest opposition to same-sex marriage, followed by neighbor Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

I don't think it's happening before 2030... it isn't seen as something urgent by the government, and people are convinced it's already legal with civil unions. Maybe the EU will sort of force us to legalize it.

Yeah, it's funny how in the opinion polls, Italy has the highest percentage supporting gay marriage out of all the countries that don't have it already, 73% according to Pew Research in new study. (https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/11/27/how-people-around-the-world-view-same-sex-marriage/) And even higher when asked from young people ofc.

It's in reference to the "Law on the Protection of Minors against the Detrimental Effects" which was condemned by the European Parliament and has been unsuccessfully cited to ban Pride events in Lithuania.

I believe there was also an instance of the law being used to prevent a clip that promoted tolerance towards LGBT people from being broadcast.

Yeah, this happened around a decade ago. They did recently decide to uphold the law earlier this year though, there was some vote in the Seimas.

Quote

Lithuanian lawmakers have rejected a proposal to scrap an existing ban on informing minors about LGBTQ+ relations and anything “denigrating family values”.

The provision, which has been in the Law on the Protection of Minors from the Harmful Effects of Public Information since 2009, has been challenged at the European Court of Human Rights and deemed in violation to the right of free expression.

Fifty-six MPs voted against changing the law, while 50 supported the amendment drafted by the Justice Ministry and 19 abstained.

The proposed amendment would have removed the provision saying that any information that “denigrates family values, promotes a different concept of marriage and family formation from that enshrined in the Constitution and the Civil Code” is harmful to minors.

Recent rulings have sparked hopes that Hong Kong will soon legalize same-sex marriage : NPR

SUI: But amid the worries, there's cautious optimism. That's because Hong Kong's courts handed down four key rulings this year in favor of the LGBTQ community. The most important ruling, handed down in September by Hong Kong's highest court, ordered the government to create a framework to recognize same-sex unions within two years.

JEROME YAU: Now, of course, the court stopped short of mandating the government to implement same-sex marriage. But at the same time, the message is very clear. First of all, same-sex couples should be able to live a dignified life, and their relationships should be recognized and protected by law. And the government has two years to work on this framework. I think that's a very, very important development.

SUI: That's Jerome Yau, co-founder of Hong Kong Marriage Equality, a nonprofit that advocates for the fair treatment of same-sex couples. He says he's not worried LGBTQ rights will be curtailed.

YAU: Well, you know, I think let's just look at the fact. You know, what I'm seeing is Hong Kong is Hong Kong, mainland is mainland, because obviously we have seen big LGBT events happening in Hong Kong, you know? In September, we had a Lesbian Gay Film Festival, Gay Games - you know, very big international sporting event promoting diversity, inclusion happening in Hong Kong for the first time in Asia in the game's history. The facts speak for themselves as to the situation here in Hong Kong.

SUI: He's optimistic the government will take action to adhere to the highest court's ruling.

YAU: Well, I'm cautiously optimistic. This is a legal obligation. The government is legally required to do something within two years. This is the final judgment of the court. I would be very surprised if the government did not do anything.

SUI: Recent surveys have found out around 60% of Hong Kong people support same-sex marriage - much higher than in the past. Now people like Alan are waiting to see if the government will keep pace with changing attitudes in society and grant homosexual couples the same rights heterosexual couples have, including to inherit each other's assets, make medical decisions for each other, and get married right here in Hong Kong.
