Virgos Groove Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 You can't buy anything with them. You can't use them in most machines. They cost more to produce than they're worth (probably, idk). Nobody picks them off the floor. Seriously, why do we keep using these little spawns of Satan? 2
Sonny Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Yes. We haven’t been using them for over a decade in the Netherlands.
Mitsouko Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Yes but what happens when someone pays cash for something and is owed change? 1
Gelato Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 (edited) tbh physical cash is heading towards extinction anyway, I don't think there's really any point investing all the time and energy needed to withdraw small value coins from circulation. I bet most mints haven't produced any new ones in ages too Edited December 15, 2023 by Gelato

You round up or down the prices. €1.36 becomes €1.35, €1.99 becomes €2.00 (or €1.95 if stores want to), etc. The only problem would be the price of bread. I can't speak for all of Europe, but here in Portugal a 1 cent change in the price tends to be a big deal. 1
LadyDiana Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 As long as Germany is in eurozone nothings gonna change... deutsche Omas will cut you if you don't give them their pffenibg back. Plus germans LOVE cash, and I mean L O V E
blown away Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Yes, they should've been a while ago. They should even get rid of the 5 cents imo. The only thing they do is clog up my wallet and I never use them.
Rev8 Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Omg I have a whole jar with them it's so heavy too!

I didn't know there were still countries using those small coins. I thought most countries solved the change problem years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cash_rounding
Leptine Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 I totally agree, I often leave them to the cashier because it's just pointless weight to carry on my pockets.
katara Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 This is why i pay exclusively with card. Got sooo tired of carrying all those pennies. I still have a huge bucket of less than 5 cent coins that weighs like 5 kg
djcalpal Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 Canada did this a few years ago and it makes soooo much sense. Lowest coin being 5 cents now.
Kamil24 Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 We did this in Canada and it works so much better. Still weird for me to get pennies when I go to the US or parts of Europe.
