Excited for this :duca: I don't know much but unfortunately for me that Lapsley album was a dirge to get through

Låpsley was a win for me this year, but I think it's a win when an album has like a few listenable songs :bibliahh:

I've never heard of a single song so far :jonnycat:

This makes me feel so unique. :khalyan:

There'll be more mainstream songs coming up though!

Låpsley and LVRA are one of my favorite discoveries this year. Can't believe i just know about them now :dies:

That Mae Stephens song is actually more tolerable than the break up song she made that went viral on TikTok nn

Låpsley has a pretty solid discography, but her debut album is definitely quite different, as she has taken a much more minimalistic electronic sound afterwards. Still worth a check!

Clones was the only song from LVRA's newest release that really jumped out to me, but definitely have to keep my eye on her future stuff!

Wasn't a big fan of the NMIXX song, I'd probably prefer all their title tracks over it except DICE :fan:

I hate all NMIXX songs except Love Me Like This lmao. Talented girls but what a horrid discography..

88. Nope

87. Not a big fan of happy beats tbh

86. Nope

85. Kinda boring IMO

84. Oh a half spanish track... mmm nope

83. I know that I said "not a big fan of happy beats" but this is kinda cool, reminds me those DDR songs

82. Nope

81. Interesting, i'm digging it

Nice set, a really change of pace of what I usually listen to

No prob, I hate those "i don't know any of this songs" comments, I mean, there's a f***ing link to listen to it :rip:

I was trying to pinpoint what kind of sound SKY was going for, and you're so right that it does remind you of DDR!

5 hours ago, ARTPØP said:

Sadly haven't heard of any of these songs before :rip:

But going to add some to my "check out" list based on their covers, alone! :allears:

Excited to see the rest of your list

I'll have a Spotify playlist out for when the list is done for easy previewing!

I definitely do that song/album cover thing as well when trying to find new music elsewhere or during the Best Of threads in ATRL!

5 hours ago, worldwide angel said:

oooh i want to check out angelica :siptea:

At this point I've only heard one song from her but Bye Bye is really lovely!

3 hours ago, Alldeezy said:

will also need to check these out .. may do what sparks doing tbh :gaycat4:

Like I mentioned there'll be a Spotify playlist later when the list is done so you can do a quick glance without having to commit!

Anyway, next update is coming soon!

80. Alice Auer - Baby, Cry

''  I guess I'm just a sucker for this kind of beautiful, solemn indie folk type of stuff. BABEYYYYYY CCCRRYYYYYYYY. ''
youtube

2VUBBBN.png
79. Alicia Creti - Strange

'' I'm also a sucker for these kinds of soulful vocals, especially when they get all guttural and shout-y. Love her voice. ''
youtube

3uh8el6.png

78. Remi Wolf - Prescription

''  Remi keeps being in a league of her own when it comes to her sound. It's so unique to her and she keeps delivering some really dope stuff. Not all of it is my jam, but this certainly is. Street You Live On remains my absolutely favorite from her. I want more songs like that Remi plz. This is pretty close tho. ''
youtube

rqCyOpD.png

77. パソコン音楽クラブ - Day After Day feat. Mei Takahashi

'' This type of uplifting, happy summer-y sort of minimalistic electronic pop only seems to come out of Japan these days, and I treasure every song like this This is a nice little serotonin boost if you need one! ''
youtube

chKahUx.png

76. Vira Talisa - Like It Was Meant To Be

''  I didn't think jazz would end up on my Best Of 2023 list but this track was just that beautiful and classy. ''
youtube

QZJp6CQ.png

75. Mimi Webb - Freezing

''  I prefer Mimi's ballads to her more upbeat pop productions, but this song just has that pure pop energy I require during these trying times. It's not experimental, it's not combining genres, it's not complicated, just pure good pop. ''
youtube

U1UrrWd.png

74. Alice Ivy - Broke My Heart (feat. Mallrat & Jelani Blackman)

'' A better chorus than 90% of mainstream pop these days and all she sings is HAHHHHH HHAAAHHH WOAAHHHAHAHAH. Also one of the rare times when I think a male rap feature elevates a song. ''
youtube

XzGgXJD.png

73. pin.sku - Tapan sut

''  Ah yes, the Finnish domination is finally starting in this Best Of list. Not one of pin.sku's best, as I expected more from a title that translates to '' I'll kill you '' but it's really good nonetheless. She is the resident '' artsy '' sadgirl of pop, and she holds that mantle well with this song. ''
youtube

BwXHDyG.png

72. Troye Sivan - Rush

'' The first and last Troye song I enjoy. Congratulations babe! Though I must say I kind of got sick of it in a week, but it sounds fresh again after taking a big break from listening to it. That said, it is not the gay song of the year, someone else further down the list is taking that title.  ''
youtube

UjpmUnO.png

71. Dreamilla & Aatulove - En sua haluu

'' I feel like this could be a global (mega) hit if it was sung by anyone else except two random up-and-coming indie artists from Finland. The beat goes hard for me. It's very on-trend but Finnish pop always likes to add an element of something more moody and depressive in the lyrics and/or production, which is true in En sua haluu as well.  ''

The way Rush is the only song I know :clown: Gotta work on my taste

Prescription is just so good. She better announce new album for next year! :jonny:

The way Rush is Troye's comeback on the mainstream spotlight since Blue Neighborhood is kinda sending me like, he knows the song is just THAT good for the GP not paying attention to it :dies:

Prescription was great! Need another full project from her asap! Rush is of course incredible too.

I'll need to check out some of these :clap3:, didn't love mimi's album except for a handful of songs personally. Rush is alright for a nightclub not a regular listen, very repetitive idk

70. Karina Magallon - Lucid Dreaming

'' I just love that beat and melody. It's kinda hypnotic. She was a potential mother for that whistle note at the end as well! ''

youtube

M4Py0F0.png

69. Olivia Dean - Dive

''  One of the youtube comments in Dive's music video said it the best. There's an absence of positive, happy music in mainstream these days. And this hits the mark of what's missing. And I agree, I'd love to hear more positivity in mainstream pop, both in lyrics and in production. I was also ready to call this a summer BOP, but funnily the music video is anything but summer-y lmao. ''

youtube

PS6jKXa.png

68. Lucia & The Best Boys - Burning Castles

''  This is very early/mid 2010s alt pop/rock-core, does anyone else hear that or is it just me?  Either way I love it for kinda taking me back to that era regardless. ''

youtube

O0dcOnM.png

67. PinkPantheress - Mosquito

'' Oh PinkPantheres... the way Heaven Knows was such a dud. I expected more from the artists that was playing a part in bringing this kind of dreamy liquid DnB into the pop scene (which I weirdly love despite not being a big DnB fan), and we are going to see a lot of liquid type of beat in this list going forward. And they all kinda ate miss PinkPantheress up I fear. Mosquito is her best song for me and I love it, and remains so even after the release of Heaven Knows. It sounds like a real, complete song instead of just a beat and some vocals, if that makes sense. ''

youtube

p0oWLBK.png

66. Aiida - August

''  I am the only Aiida stan in existence I'm sure (the youtube video has 24 views for gods sake after 3 months!). She was very much at the top of my list last year, and she managed to get in this year's list as well. Sadly she's had a bit of a rough patch this year with her songs but August is definitely her return to form for me. Just really good pop music, and she really knows how to build up a chorus. But queen, we are going to have to talk about these short ass songs! And this song even ends kind of abruptly which I do not like. But still, a big big bop. ''

youtube

CCv8NSw.png

65. ALMA - Run Run Run

''  Poor ALMA. Try as she might, the popheads on ATRL or elsewhere will never give her her flowers. But she kinda delivered her weakest project this year, and Time Machine just wasn't a very compelling album. I'm not sure why the sudden change in sound (especially when her aesthetic still remains the same as ever), but it just isn't working. Heavy Rules Mixtape and Have U Seen Her? ended careers, they were damn fantastic, but this time her new album ended her own damn career I fear. Even so, Run Run Run is genuinely one of her best songs, so not all is lost for her.  ''

youtube

Cuc8IAt.png

64. Charlotte Cardin - Feel Good

''  This song makes me Feel Good. ''

youtube

1fpxvDN.png

63. Rachel Sermanni - Big Desire

''  Idk why but this song is such a jam. The songwriting, the melody, the vocal delivery and the very minimal instrumentation is just fantastic. It's not a listen to everyday allday kinda song, but I have a hard time skipping it. It's generally hard for me to find English sung indie folk that I really like, so Rachel girl, you did that. I'll keep on checking you for future releaes.  ''

youtube

6WjH0xW.png

62. Maria José Llergo - TANTO TIEMPO

''  I've had Maria's songs on my favorites for a while now, hoping for a new album that was reflecting the more pop route that she was going for with her singles. And honestly, ULTRABELLEZA ended up being one of the better albums this year, and I think Pitchfork 7.9 rating was right on the money. TANTO TIEMPO is beautiful, and the chorus is an earworm. Have I gone around my work place singing tanto tanto tanto tiempo tanto tanto tanto tiempo tanto tanto tanto tiempo tanto? Yes I have. If you are at all into ROSALIA (and esp her El Mal Querer album) check Maria's new album out!  ''

youtube

7U051G1.png

61. Lola Young - Revolve Around You

'' I love everything about this song... except the lyrics? It's such a big NAH, CANNOT RELATE moment for me. But like I said, everything else about the song is amazing. ''

Period @ the list expansion  All the Things is alright, Baby Queen didn't serve super hard this year like I wanted her to. Rear View :clap3: Such a random discovery for me but yeah, Moyka has some bops & that's definitely one of them. The new album is a major improvement over her debut, too. Prescription is so good yesssss, definitely wasn't expecting her to drop a song like this. At least not on its own. We love the SYLO shoutout. Rush :alexz: But not this being the first song of his that you enjoy :dancehall: Well... better than none. I listened to Charlotte Cardin's album but I can't remember anything called Feel Good for the life of me so I have to assume I didn't care for it :oh: Ready for this top 60 :beatfreak:

There's something about Mosquito (the song) that felt really nostalgic to me. Like, everytime i hear it, i just want to play The Sims 2 :dies:

I want to listen to Olivia Dean again because the new album is kinda cute :clap3:

I used to be like quite into ALMA, but I always felt like she could deliver something better and in reality her output just kept getting less and less interesting. I think she's done for me sadly

Raw Thoughts still the best Baby Queen song. I didn't love Moyka's album but Rear View kind of grew on me unexpectedly. It was a pretty late sneak into the list actually! Prescription is great and it's nice to see artists keep the momentum going and not lose out in quality. SYLO is incredible, I hope the hear more songs similar to that in the future.

Troye is a miss for me, didn't like either of his follow ups to Rush either, but at least he has Rush!

Charlotte Cardin released an album in August (which was meh) but already in September she had a new single out that wasn't on the album which was Feel Good. It's definitely better than anything on the album!

Yeah I think after Time Machine she is done for me too. I don't know why she decided to go for such a plain pop sound this time around when she excels at dance music and stuff like Cowboy and When I Die had such an interesting sound that was unique to her. She could be out there taking Becky Hills career with being THE dance/edm girlie but she decided nah, I'm going to make a completely flavourless pop album instead.

Anyways, going to be posting the next set of songs before I go to bed!

Best Of: Songs 60-51

WzVizsn.png

60. NiziU - Heartris

''  Unpretentious and fun. The k-pop stans are hellbent on ignoring them and idk why. Your loss I guess because this was easily one of the best k-pop release this year. NiziU is constantly evolving and getting better for me, and I hope the gals find lots of success in their future. ''

youtube

dQekJUK.png

59. LÈON - Dirt

'' This is elevated LÈON. She's always been kind of nondescript and generic, but this is truly a beautifully crafted pop song. If she continues with this sound and songwriting, she might have a great upcoming album in her hands. Don't let me down LÈON! ''

youtube

Gm2Hisq.png

58. Caroline Polacheck - Fly To You (feat. Grimes & Dido)

''  Desire, I Want To Turn Into You was utterly dreadful, I really do not care for Caroline, and I often feel gaslit when people hype her up. But she made several points with this song, and she sounded great on the chorus. Grimes wasn't needed though, and Dido, one of my all time favorite artists, should've had way more lines. Honestly I'd suggest Dido to just take this sound and continue on her own, without these other girls cramping her style. ''

youtube

yOgyJoq.png

57. Serafiina - Player

''  Serafiina is absolutely fantastic, she really embodies a lot of trendy sounds of today while making them her own. Her self-titled EP that was released this year is a banger after banger after banger, and I recommend everyone to check it out if this song sparked any interest (especially Hullu and Terapiaa). Player as a song is not my favorite from hers, but it's such a glorious mindless catchy bop that you just cannot help but dance to whenever it comes on. ''

youtube

JbZMNwH.png

56. Emmeline - The Dance

''  Now THIS right here is called SONGWRITING. I love her vocal delivery on this song as well. ''

youtube

byHdDlL.png

55. Eli Rose - CDN

''  This song is oh so lush, and if it had a flavor, it's probably taste like champagne flavored cotton candy.. with edible gold leaves on it. Man idk, I'm running out of ways to describe some of these songs. I just like it okay? ''

youtube

SHThdnS.png

54. Anabel Englund - strangely sentimental

''  Okay, number one, MASSIVE BOP. Number two, 2 minutes 14 seconds? You've gotta be kidding me. ENOUGH of this bullshit!''

youtube

f879325.png

53. Tilly Valentine - Statue

''  I could assign this song to any season of the year, it truly transcends seasons. You could put it in a summer playlist or a Christmas playlist and it'd sound like it'd fit in. ''

youtube

PbcUcxV.png

52. Lyn Lapid - ok with it

'' This was originally lower on the list but I grew to like it more and more, especially the chorus and the lyrics. A lot of good memorable choruses this year, honestly. ''

youtube

mTlt6Ot.png

51. FILLY - Discotheque

''  I'm so glad eurodance inspired stuff like this is becoming more and more trendy lately. It's so unserious and fun (even when it's trying to be serious). If you can listen to this and not vibe at least a tiny bit, you must be a miserable person. JOKING!!! ''

Yeah I am very picky about the men. But I'd say if we went into 80-90s music and Japanese music in general, it would be less overwhelmingly female.

Honestly, NiziU has kinda been the only good JYP GG group for a while now. ITZY released only one bearable song this year and TWICE's quality is very inconsistent. I really liked Talk That Talk though.

YES. Miss Dido needs to come back full time! Still On my Mind showed a lot of promise in terms of the evolution of her sound, I wish she pushed even further with her electronic sound.

Caroline's album was not it, but most of the people on this forum seemingly adore it? Fly To Me was the only standout, just like Mosquito was a standout from Heaven Knows.

50. Luísa Sonza & Tokischa - La Muerte

''  Love this. And that music video is probably my VOTY (and it REALLY elevates the song), like I didn't expect it at all after hearing the song! Way to subvert expectations. ''
youtube

lralaEA.png

49. Tkay Maidza - Love and Other Drugs

'' I've been a Tkay fan since the Tkay era, and she's improved immensely since then. Sweet Justice is one of the best albums of the year, and it really showcases Tkay's talents and diverse sound really well. This spot could've gone to WUACV, Ring-Ring, Silent Assassin, Free Throws or What Ya Know, but I think Love and Other Drugs showcases most of her talents and what to expect from the album in general. ''

youtube

o7CfzQ2.png

48. Luna Morgenstern - SOS/Stranded

''  Is there a name for this kind of beat because I know I'm looking a fool calling it liquid dnb for the millionth time. Either way the chorus really brings it. I didn't like the outro at first but now I kind of love it. ''
youtube

DzUq9Mk.png

47. Leadley - Thank You

''  This is what I expected more of from the PinkPanthress album sonically. This is definitely more pop-adjacent than PinkPantheress, but I guess that's why I love it that more. And it just feels more like an actual song than a lot of stuff from Heaven Knows. I also just like the positive vibes of the song in general. ''

youtube

P8RrWPw.png

46. MILLI - Puhu mut ympäri

''  I have listened to this song a lot this year. It's pretty basic, but it's just so damn catchy, addictive and uplifting. The instruments during the chorus beat drop are so good! ''

youtube

MsiGrwT.png

45. ROSALÍA - LLYLM

''  What's going on, why haven't I seen this in anyone's Best Of list yet, do people hate the song, is it too pop, why aren't people stanning the way I am? It's just... such a good pop song that imo does have a good combination of ROSALÍAs flamenco pop background and modern pop sensibilities. ''
youtube

v62AHbb.png

44. XG - LEFT RIGHT

''  This song is the best song with the stupidest, nonsensical lyrics of 2023. Seriously, what the **** is going on with those lyrics LMAO. But damn if it's not a ******* VIBE of a song. I prefer it so much more to SHOOTING STAR song that was big for a few weeks in the k-pop thread. ''

youtube

pZHSqyx.png

43. Elohim - Afraid to Fail

'' This hard-hitting indsturial-esque beat. **** yes. But Elohim, I need you to actually deliver a good album please. I need an album full of songs like this, Buckets and I Am The Greatest. I want to hear you scream most of the chorus. I want to stan you so bad but you only deliver once in a while.''
youtube

OjiG4iy.png

42. Fanny Bloom - Holistique

''  Just a very beautiful song that I'm hooked on. I'm really easy to please I suppose, just hit me with some pretty vocals and nice vocal layering.''

41. Kylie Minogue - Tension

''  I was already sold with Padam Padam, but then Tension came and destroyed Padam Padam. While I didn't love Tension the album, Tension the single is probably in the top 10 Kylie songs of all time for me, and Kylie has plenty of good songs so that's a massive compliment. With Kylie I've mostly accepted that while I don't love her albums (not since Aphrodite anyway), she ALWAYS delivers at least one huge bop. Justice for Dancing by the way. This time she delivered Padam Padam and Tension, and I can be perfectly happy with that. ''
