What can be done with Award shows?

So last night it was the Game Awards and two things I've noticed:

1) people complaining that it's more of an AD show than an award show

2) People getting cut off way too quickly

It lead to articles like this:

Same with the Billboard Awards being just mainly performances.

Meanwhile shows actually focused on the winners (Oscar's and Golden Globes for example ) are posting record lows.

So what can be done to change the format? For the Game Awards I agree about the winners getting more screen time but I feel like people are gonna watch it less than with the trailerfest it is.

idk but the Oscars better nominate Billie, Olivia and Dua for BOS just so they all perform and bring in the (youth) ratings

Another victim of the modern attention span. A lot of people just want to see the results and get over with it fast so they can boast about their fave game in online stan wars (which yes, do exist in the video game sphere).

a lot of people only watch The Game Awards for the trailers tho they can't help it. and it's obviously working for them especially now that E3 is dead

The first category(BBMAs, TGAs, etc)  is useless in the age of social media unless the awards show pulls out ENORMOUS peak VMAs type gags(The Game Awards has managed this before when they got ppl like Kojima and Eiji Aonuma to show up and unveil games/dlc, for example, but that can't be every year because they don't have projects to show off every year). If it's not the biggest, most respected names pulling out ALL the stops, the shows feel like forced promotion.

The second category(Oscars, Grammys, etc) tried to preserve itself by rebranding as exclusive and more discerning than the court of public opinion sometime in the late 90s- early 00s but became at odds with or even openly hostile towards public opinion.

The awards are either not the point or they're out of touch. A people's choice type award is also useless for entertainment awards when charts are widely accessible. I think the way forward is an entirely different type of programming that still manages to celebrate/promote popular culture but with a different type of filler than awards nobody cares about.

Glad developers and creatives are being awarded for thier achievements and giving good games to the community. But I don’t really watch or care for the award shows beyond that.

Agreed I feel like the focus of Pop culture where there's a balance with handing out the right awards with the right amount of time for speeches and have segments that entertain without being pandering is the way to go. Also stop making them more than 2 hours. In case of the Game Awards, it just needs to be a new E3 and have the awards be an announcement type deal. It's clear this isn't working anymore and the viewership is gonna drop hard in a few years if this keeps going how it is.

Here are a few ideas that I think would definitely revive & even skyrocket views back to even a fraction of the peak era 2009-2013

  ● Partner with versus & have mini versus battles between smaller artists

●  Kinda the same as my above point but have bigger, more established artist FACE OFF in dance battles, or riff offs. Would definitely be never before seen in award shows in general

● The obvious - having entire live shows be available on streaming platforms. This isn't 2003. Like :cm:

They’re way too long. In the case of the Oscars they happen way too late into the movie season, and by the time they air the nominees are old news.

Have them on streaming platforms or YouTube

also too many performances and not enough awards given out

they go on for too long too because of the 1000 performances :rip:

everyone just cares about the winners nowadays and no one wants to sit through an hours long show, especially when not even available on streaming which completely rules out Gen Z caring. also awards don't have the same prestige because we have more awareness of the politics behind winning versus actually rewarding the best in each category

Awards shows are boring to watch, especially when one artist sweeps everything. Also the performances are made by some z listers nowadays, it's not prestigious anymore

- Live stream the show on a digital platform worldwide

- No ads

- Cut number of performances in half.

-Singers 2 people in the world have heard of as the performers. People want to see Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Drake, Justin Bieber, etc., not some random "up-and-coming star" with 500,000 Spotify streams.

-Art films no one has seen as the nominees. People need someone to root for. They can't root for films they don't know or care about.

-Predictability. There is no suspense when you pretty much know who is going to win in every single category as soon as nominees are announced. We need surprises.

-No controversy. Some of the most iconic VMA moments have been because of the drama and scandal. Now everyone is so afraid of being canceled on social media or being accused of having no talent and relying on shock that they play it 100% safe at all times. It is rather boring to watch.

I think the very concept of an award show is outdated. I feel like they need to change format and be more like a multi-day expo or festival, celebrating music and the arts. Awards just feel so arbitrary these days, especially when it seems like everyone has them—except the ones who are, probably, most deserving of them.

I feel like if they were much more of an interactive event with the general public being able to take part in them, to some extent, they'd have a resurgence—with an overall change in format and how they're presented. What I believe should be expos or festivals should highlight and recognize the music, music, games, etc. of the year, not just the "chosen few" based on industry politics.
