As expected, Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” triumphed in the Record of the Year category in our 2004 poll—though OutKast’s classic “Hey Ya!” booked a respectable runner-up position. The Grammy winner—Coldplay’s “Clocks”—finished third. With this win, Beyoncé becomes the first artist to have won both Record and Song in this poll series; she previously won Song of the Year for her contributions to “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child. We have a repeat winner in the 2004 Song of the Year category as well, as Avril Lavigne wins a second consecutive poll with “I’m With You.”

In 2005, the Grammys decided that they had had enough of the pop girls and nominated a bunch of other people instead. Still, there are some classic hits here, I guess, if they’re your sort of thing. Genuinely not sure what results to expect here, though I don’t really expect us to match the Grammys. Ray Charles and Norah Jones won Record of the Year for “Here We Go Again” and John Mayer won Song of the Year for “Daughters.”

Live Like you were dying was a huge country song selling over 2 million copies alone. It was a 7 week #1 on the country charts and reached #29 on the billboard chart. The single helped the album sell 766,000 copies in it’s first week debuting at #1 on the all 200 chart. The album is now 4x platinum.

none of those record of the year ones are very good... but I guess Yeah

Alicia for If I Ain't Got You for song for sure :heart2:

(and yes, I know American Idiot is there... sorry but it's extremely overrated and has aged poorly. Green Day has many way better politically-minded songs)

Given the underwhelming nature of this slate of nominees, I thought I’d take a look at some things nominated in other categories that could have been here instead.

Kylie - Slow

Evanescence - My Immortal

Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved

Britney Spears - Toxic

Ryan Adams - Wonderwall

Prince - Call My Name

Jay Z - 99 Problems

The Chicks - Top of the World (Live) — Record only

So there were definitely some opportunities to get proper classics in there. And Toxic, too.

Yeah. The 2005 ceremony covers the October 2003 through September 2004 eligibility period, and so forth.
