Raptus Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 The 1980s were hell for LGBT community. After AIDS pandemic started GP wanted the gays to be isolated or dead. Only Madonna had our back. Now, when there's no consequences, every pop girl is here for the gays. But which would switch like a f** if she was popular in the 80s, when homosexuality acceptance was in the gutter?
sickofwaitingtables Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Probably, all of them. Sadly. 5

BrentB Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 The obvious: Nicki Maybe Katy Perry & Cardi too I see Selena Gomez & Taylor being radio silent on the issue as it'd be "bad for branding." Bey would acknowledge, it but in a "Judge the sin, not the sinner," type of mentality
Take Me Apart Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Taylor would perform at Reagan rallies 1 10
GraceRandolph Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 It’d be easier to list the ones who wouldn’t tbh. 3
Popular Post AxelFox Posted November 29, 2023 Popular Post Posted November 29, 2023 Most of them would not have made it in the 80s with the talent and artistry they're displaying nowadays (or lack of therefor) so this is a moot point 6 9
tiagol88 Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 99% of them are label puppets so basically all current popstars. 1
Distantconstellation Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Cyndi Lauper dedicated True Colors to a gay friend of hers who died of AIDS. Anyway only the strong minded independent ones would be gay friendly, people like Pink & Christina Aguilera. Maybe Kelly Clarkson, although i think she would be gay friendly behind close doors only.
Anthinos Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Probably P!nk. I think most of them would be homophobic.

It was written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg - the same people who wrote Like a Virgin two years earlier for Madonna. Billy himself said he wrote it about his Mother, which is mostly about seeing past one's flaws and honoring the true quality of their character. I think people who don't know Madonna's career think she started supporting us in the late 80s, but she was doing it in the late 70s before she even became famous. PinkLamborghini Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Honestly, almost all would drop the gays. Madge was a fierce ally. I think Ayu and CupcakKe would have been too. 2

superben Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Beyonce might even have made a statement against the gays.
Raptus Posted November 29, 2023 Author Posted November 29, 2023 SZA would be like: "I think what they do...has no class to it" 12
Infinite Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Taylor Swift didn't speak about gays for almost her entire career 3 5 1
Tropez Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 I don’t get this question. A lot of female artists did support gay people, or simply had a large gay audience. The difference is a lot of gay men were closeted, and a lot of these gay men worked closely with many of the popular female artists of the time. For instance Sylvester was a very gay, and out artist in the 70s/80s. He was close friends with Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and Patti LaBelle, they also worked together. Luther Vandross was very clearly gay, but closeted. He even did an album with Aretha. All those women had a very large gay fan base. And they knew it. I think we are focusing too much of contemporary politics and not understanding the nuance of the past. I don’t think any of the girls today would drop their gay fans. They may not acknowledge it. Which was something a lot of people did. Gayness was often not spoken about. 4 2

Sadly, this kind of rational response and actually nuanced notion wasn’t what OP had in mind considering the intention of the thread is to take a dig at people who certain people here like to consider homophobic, etc. Edited November 29, 2023 by Lemon 2
popmusicisdead Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 not Xtina. she's always been an ally/actually bi 1
jjmed59 Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 (edited) Not Ariana, a musical theater loving, f** hag , sister of a gay man who probably wouldve been closeted but obvious to her thus making her even more protective of the gays not gaga too for obvious reasons. as for the rest.. esp taylor and katy …. no comment Edited November 29, 2023 by jjmed59
