swissman Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 (edited) It effortlessly put the ART back into POP in such a way that almost redefined what a pop album and era could/should be in the 2010s. It wasn't about "shock". It was about "surprise". It wasn't about lengthy promotion to get the most commercially successful debut as it could, it was about synthesizing art, commerce and fame into one package, and having enough confidence in the work itself that little else was needed. It took the impact of traditional promo and put that work into the album and its associated visual album. It was about upping the game, not playing it. It truly showed that pop music IS an artform if handled correctly. And in the end, through the artistry it displayed, it helped change the way critics and the public saw pop music.
