HTE vs GUTS, did Billie get the last laugh?

Recommended Posts

When we all thought Olivia's sophomore was gonna be a success, the album isn't even doing better than Billie's sophomore. GUTS spent less than 2 months on Billboard 200 top 10, It's only doing 1M more daily streams than her debut and at this rate I doubt GUTS can reach HTE numbers.

What went right for Billie and what went wrong for Olivia ? Discuss.

How did Happier Than Ever have the last laugh? I’m sorry but that album is a hot mess. It sounds like she had no clue what to do when making it. It’s incohesive, incredibly dull and has many awkward moments. Most people also agree that its a downgrade from WWAFAWDWG.

Guts just reads like a cohesive album and is an obvious improvement from SOUR’. Olivia’s vocal performance improved a lot and it has much more advanced and complex production than HTE. Felt like Finneas was also just very burned out producing Happier Than Ever cause lot of the production (minus the title track) are incredibly boring (e.g. Lost Cause, Your Power, Getting Older, Everybody Dies).

Most music publications agree that Guts is better. It got higher reviews by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Independent to name a few. Also stands at a 91 on Metacritic (deservingly so) which is higher than HTE.

I like HTE, I think it has a few fillers but also some very strong tracks (HTE, Getting Older, Oxytocin, Goldwing, NDA and BBN are all gems) but it’s also very inconsistent in some parts and it could have used a little trimming.

GUTS is far more cohesive imo and the pop rock songs are very well done, especially all-american *****.

Billie was always the bigger artist.

Guts is the better album. The fact that it's doing as well if not better than HTE commercially so far says something.

Ohh, in that case... GUTS wins

Both Guts and HTE are really good, above average albums for pop girls. They're gonna end up with equal stats, but HTE might have the edge overall when all is said and done.

Also BOTH fandoms got egg on their face bc neither of them were able to come close to their debut eras in terms of hitmaking. Although Olivia's hitmaking status took a harder fall.

Getting better rating is pretty easy when you are paying for that, just saying.

A harder fall? Guts is literally the only album of those two that was able to chart ALL its tracks in the top 40 and have a global and US #1 hit. But okay. And Guts beat SOUR in first week sales. These are all things Billie was unable to do.

Proof of her “paying” for reviews? … Now we just lying to cope. Got it.

Guts is the most critically overrated album in recent history. Sorry that's just my opinion. It is extremely uneven and has lots of filler. There is no coherence between the ballads and the rock tracks. There are a few highlights but a 91 (or whatever it's at right now) is just crazy
