Billionaire Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 (edited) Pitchfork has given her recent album a 6.4, which is not only lower than her debut EP to hell with it (7.3) but lower than albums such as GUTS, NewJJeans' self-titled EP (which has her influence all over it) & Hood's Hottest Princess by Sexyy Red. Not only that, but despite having a breakthrough moment with BAL pt 2 smashing the charts earlier this year, she was completely SNUBBED at the GRAMMYs (most notably for Best Pop Duo/Group and Best New Artist) Mind you songs that have clearly been inspired by her Y2K UK Garage sound have not only been praised by critics but have enjoyed a comfortable amount of success on charts. Is it Britphobia? Edited November 12, 2023 by Billionaire
Joyride Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 because she is a black woman (correct me if I'm wrong) doing Pop music. 12
Popular Post Just a Gay on ATRL Posted November 12, 2023 Popular Post Posted November 12, 2023 Critics don't like when a woman is serving something new and different under her own individual formula - critics pretend they're progressive but they're actually incredibly prudish, sometimes dated, and gatekeeping regarding how music "should" sound. See how they responded to Born to Die initially last decade and now everyone and their mother is inspired by Lana and Lana is pinnacle of critical acclaim nowadays. PinkPantheress is making music that sounds like no one else out rn and they don't know what to make of it because it's not what they're used to calling "acclaimed" nowadays, which if we're being honest is people singing over minimalist midtempos or piano ballads with "relatable" lyrics. My prediction is that in a couple of years you will see a lot of artists inspired by PinkPantheress her new wave sound and will see some critics changing their opinions. I'm excited to see Pink's career because imo she is serving something so new and fresh and I urge people not to sleep on her. She's not serving top tier quality by any means but this immediate dismissal of her by critics as meh while a lot of worse is getting more acclaimed is fishy to say the least. 17 1
helpthomas Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 considering the trajectory of Lana, getting a mid score from P4K whilst releasing culturally impactful music is a good sign. she will get her flowers in due time and i hope she knows that as well and isn't too upset about the lukewarm reception from these industry demons 7

All of her projects thus far have been TOP TIER quality. 1
glitch Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 (edited) British acts always have to work harder to get acknowledged by the Grammys. I do hope she'll get some acknowledgement at the BRITS next year. I think if she continues to serve quality she could get acclaim in the future. British singers do tend to have quite a short shelf life though, so it's anyone's guess if she'll buck that trend or not. Getting a lower score than GUTS is criminal. I'm not even going to talk about that Sexxy Redd mess Edited November 12, 2023 by glitch 2 1
Brooklyn Baby Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 Idk but she released an AOTY contender. She deserves to blow up
Rhyme Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 NewJeans isn't really influenced by her though. I used to think so too until Erika De Casier gave that interview and said she + other underground producers worked on the songs for Get Up years ago in a writing camp. Love the album though. 1
Solaria Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 I think her blowing up on TikTok also has a lot to do with it. Critics are not that receptive towards it.
wish Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 This thread just made me realize that PinkPantheress's presence in pop is kinda similar to Charli XCX. HEAR ME OUT Both of them are British electronic pop girlies (signed to Warner) who constantly straddle the line between mainstream and alternative. They both get hits every once in a while, usually with features, but don't have as much GP appeal with their material overall. Both of their signature sounds are super innovative but they never really get their due credit from the industry Pitchfork also panned Charli for a while 1

Is it Britphobia? My fav sabotaged her in best pop duo. An artist can only have one nomination in a single grammys category. Since Ice Spice was on the Karma remix, only one of Karma and Boy's a Liar could be nominated in best pop duo. Karma got more votes so Boy's a Liar was snubbed. Same thing would have happened with Candy Necklace if Taylor had submitted Snow on the Beach featuring Lana instead. 1
Airlie Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 Her only hit song she pronounces liar as “leear” lol 3 minutes ago, LittleStarmen said: The name makes it difficult to take seriously And this 1
Odd Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 short songs and the genre can get repetitive her music gets called "tiktok music" a lot no stage presence her releases are much more interesting compared to mainstream stuff so idk for sure plus, she has the perfect voice for uk garage 6
tupperware Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 i mean, it's her debut album, it's ok to grow a little. i think ppl have gotten accustomed to major debut eras like billie or olivia. if she really is a pop genius like so many are saying, she'll get her moment in the sun in the future for sure.

Look at Best Dance/Electronic Recording though: Best Dance/Electronic Recording Aphex Twin, “Blackbox Life Record 21F” James Blake, “Loading” Disclosure, “Higher Than Ever Before” Romy & Fred Again.., “Strong” Skrillex, Fred Again.. & Flowdan “Rumble” Best Pop Dance Recording Kylie Minogue, “Padam Padam” Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding, “Miracle” David Guetta, Anne-Marie & Coi Leray, “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” Troye Sivan, “Rush” Bebe Rexha & David Guetta, “One In a Million”
BOOMBAYAH Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 Simple: Her career started on TikTok. The industry is probably going to snub her another 2 - 3 years before considering her a “serious” artist.
Heirloom Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 Huh I remember the buzz and hype around her from indie masses were quiet big during her EP. Maybe bc now she’s popular and collabing with big artists, the hipster crowd don’t like it? Probably will be retconned in the future. As in mainstream media, I don’t think she will make it big. Her performing style isn’t suitable for that (GP will hate her and call her talentless )

Not if you’re fat and release safe ballads tho. OT: irl it’s shocking, there are no artists making the kind of music she does. I guess people still need to get used to her progressive instrumentals. Katamari Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 (edited) The new Liz phair she will get her flowers in due time tho Edited November 12, 2023 by Katamari
FOCK Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 The same reason they didn’t accept Wynter Gordon or Tinashe’s pop offerings. Their loss. My understanding is she’s also quite stage shy & prefers not to be in the spotlight.
Power love Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 I have never ever heard of this artist. She isn’t that mainstream. Can someone recommend a song of hers or album i spoiled listen to? 1
John Slayne Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 many critics are old boomers who take 10 years to catch up with what's actually good.
