Dua Lipa - "Houdini"

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Dua’s whole power and appeal is that she takes sophisticated influences and transforms them into 3 minute power pop songs. The reason FN was so acclaimed was because it was ‘meticulously crafted pop’. She knows her influences, she knows her strengths, she has commercial power and she uses it

Dua is never going to make a Caroline Polachek or Tame Impala album, and why would she? There is already Caroline Polachek and Tame Impala. Dua is here to take those influences and make flawless catchy layered gorgeous POP songs that will rule radio airwaves and fill stadiums worldwide

I was literally the pikachu face on my first play.. and not the good kind of face. But immediately after my second play, I got it. :jonny5:This is fantastic, dramatic, perfectly catchy, and the right kind of CRUNCHYYY. Reminds me the most (in her oeuvre) of Future Nostalgia title track. I'm SO relieved since I was mostly ******* worried about the quality control in her camp especially after her..choices of Prisoner, WG, TME mess, Demeanor, Sweetest Pie, Potion one after another. I was beginning to think she lost her taste!!!!!!!!!

Dont Start Now reception was more negative

Yeah, idk if the single thread is still up. but i remember very clearly the 'monotonous', 'flat', 'repetitive' complaints especially about the chorus.

Though what differentiates it is, Houdini has a different atmosphere, its kinda moodier, "angrier".  DSN had more of a euphoric feeling. And I feel the outro will be polarizing to the GP!

Wait yes, the only applicable comparison

Not lead single material.  I’m sure I’ll eventually start liking it after it gets shoved down our face, but for now it’s pretty lazy.

It’s super catchy I love it I just wish there was an instrumental after 1:24 before the second verse

ok my darlings

so i’ve been thinking on it all day and so far the two short melodies/cadences the “catch me or i go houdini” part reminds me of are… (and brace yourselves lol)

“suffocation, no breathing” in Last Resort by Papa Roach (:rip:)

and

”penthouse, rooftop, birds i’m feedin” in Hot in Herre by Nelly lol

but I swear there’s gotta be something else it reminds me of…

EITHER WAY! I love this song, Dua knocked it outta the park :clap3:

you know I actually really like the lack of one there, it makes the coda far more satisfying!

How is this song lazy, it’s vastly different than anything popular right now, it’s above 3 minutes (rare in this day and age), the production is crisp and layered… maybe you don’t like it but lazy it is not :rip:

The production is kinda chaotic asf... sounds like a Blessed Madonna remix :deadbanana4: it kinda tried too hard to be 2003 Kelis/Fergie but it's just straight up NOISE. And why is the chorus 10 seconds long

Ehhh it's okay. Very on brand for her but i don't think it was exciting and refreshing like DSN when it came out. I was expecting something else

Maybe the video will elevate it
