probably my favorite Madonna song ever. so mature and contemplative and beautiful in a way that is just timeless and will never age  the fact that she was able to turn a 6 minute strange and meditative song like this into a hit is why creatively she will always be the queen of pop. she bent zeitgeist to her artistic will unlike really any other pop star.

Beautifully said. And the thing about Madonna is, she pulled this off multiple times. It goes further than just quote unquote reinvention, which most people these days mistake for a different haircolor

The song is immaculate. 

The cinematic production in the beginning is so haunting and beautiful, and then her vocals come in and they are so rich and gorgeous. And then the chorus hits with the hmm's, that's the best part of the song for me. And then there's that magical bridge...

 

She was onto something when she recorded it. They truly don't make songs like that anymore.
