A new study about young Americans' entertainment consumption habits shows that Generation Z is far more interested in seeing stories of platonic relationships on screen than those featuring sex and romance.

Quote

Nearly 40% said they particularly want to see more non-romantic relationships or asexual characters on screen. The majority of respondents said they felt that romance in media is overused. (The study in its entirety included youth aged 10-24, but questions relating specifically to sex and romance on screen were only asked of a subset aged 13-24.)

When there's media with too much sex, me and my friends often feel uncomfortable," said survey respondent Ana, age 16, in a video released by UCLA to accompany the study.

And movies/TV shows (except for some HBO series) don't even show sex anymore compared to the past.

Puriteens are WILD. Truly a conservative mindset. :rip:

No. Sex is part of the human experience and as valid/important as anything else whether some of you like it or not.

sometimes they are pointless, but sometimes they are important to the story or can be used to tell us something about the relationship dynamic between the two characters. or it can be a stylistic choice on the part of the director, and that can still be important.

No. We need more full frontal male nudity on TV.

If the sex scenes are forced then yes, they become unbearable to watch.

Seems like this research can't say whether thay's because they are Gen Z or whether it's because they are young and every generation thought this when they were younger :michael:

Eh, I guess agree that sometimes sex scenes are unnecessarily added. But I don't watch shows like Elite so it doesn't really bother me.

They should bring back nudity in horror movies though. Enough with the pretentious stories and give me some good 80s inspired modern slashes.

To be fair we have grown up exposed to the most sexualised, racy and explicit **** ever. Wrecking Ball, WAP, Blurred Lines, 13RW, Elite, 365 Days and many many other things  :rip: Yes we genz are probably becoming overexposed to it and tired

I think it depends. Some shows imo go overboard with gratuitous sex scenes, like Euphoria, White Lotus, etc. It can still be done tastefully though.

I think the article makes a good point that the abundance of porn these days leads to less of a need to seek sex in media

This is a very good point. My generation (late millennial/early gen z) grew up with less overt sexual content. So seeing a sex scene on TV felt cathartic in a way.

Meamwhile, y’all had endure trauma like WAP

This.

In the last 10 years, everything has became much more explicit. The shock value is gone and all that is left is a culture that is hyper sexualized. There's nothing wrong with including sex in media, but if it's main intention is for click bait we need to rethink why it's included.

It's not like their movies or shows are any good anyway 🤣🤣 gumball  and adventure time or whatever ridiculous trash they watch would actually benefit from sex scenes.

Although it's likely Gen X who created those garbage can TV shows

i love sex but if y'all have cut my seasons down from 24 episodes to 6 episodes then i want dialogue and development not 6 minutes of armpit sniffing i can get that on myvidster

Which movies or shows are actually showing that armpit sniffing (or anyhting remotely similar), lol And Elite doesn't count. Hdhd

Series like Normal People are excellent examples of shows using sex as a vital plot point between young people. We f*ck and not showing that when it's necessary is kinda stupid.

I just think people think dumb stuff like The Idol is the norm, and no, that's actually not the case nowadays.

Tv is at its most sexless in decades. Social media isolation has caused newer generations to be absolutely terrified of physicality

I feel like sex sells but at this point it is oversold and also portrayed in a very unrealistic way un TV shows and movies which furthers the disconnect.

I understand, but please explain how the sex scenes in White Lotus are gratuitous when they're actually there for very valid reasons.

That show ain't Nip Tuck.
