Antikythera Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 Jewel. She was considered almost the female Bob Dylan. Her furst two albums sold extremely well during the mid 90s alternative fad. Her debut has 10kk sold in the US alone. But after sometime, no one seemed to care anymore. Against her record company she decided to go full on main pop girl. Since they didnt want to fund the album, she arrange an deal with gilette and she would have to write a song called Intuition, the name of their new blade. Also, it would have to be 1st single. She did it, her fanbase said no way jojewel! She went from criticizing consumerism to making a lead to fit an ad. She went from looking grungy eith her guitar, to sexup dancing routines. GP also said never! The album was a major flop, one she never fully recovered from! Before: Going pop: The blade commercial that originated the album:

I dont consume her country stuff, but I even listened to her lullaby album lol. Now, she was more important for me 15 years algo, and I really did like 0304. "Intuition" is fan sarcastic song with social commentary and self awareness. But still it was created for an ad, her record company didnt want her going pop, she even say David Geffen (or Clive Davis) called for a meeting to detour her of going pop. Now I think she lies a lot about have being poor, that is right and no one will change my mind!

Just a Gay on ATRL Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 I think another relevant discussion is pop girls labeled as "alternative" on iTunes/AM that are honestly just pop girls from the start IE Lorde, Lana, Billie, Halsey, etc. I mean who are they trying to fool? 3
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted October 23, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted October 23, 2023 What about Belinda Carlisle's transition from Go-Go's more rock-inspired style to her very own straight up pop career. However, unlike in Jewel's case, both of these musical styles snapped for her
livelikemusic Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 The way you've gotten Jewel's point of "Intuition" all wrong shows that even in 2023 people still don't understand the song's concept. Back story of the song and her "feud" with David Geffen: 2
alejandreaux Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 obligatory Nelly Furtado mention: the switch-up that shook the industry and changed career trajectories didn’t Gaga say that seeing her smash with the Loose era is partially what inspired her to ditch the soft rock “Stefani Germanotta Band” approach and go full on dance-pop? 1
samsclubPRESENTSavam Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 even if jewel kept making pre-intuition songs, do you think her streak would have kept going? because I'm thinking about certain other similar artists from that time period and I strongly suspect she would still have been sitting next to them in terms of mainstream visibility all the same. she had a good run and got a big payday before peacing out.

I think she would be flopping just like she was in the Sranding Still era, but she would be much more respected than she is today and she would be more celebrated. Her carreer sorta went all over the place from 0304 on. All places but not to the top.

Having said that it is still a song made for the blade commercial that funded the album or helped to since her record company wasnt really feeling her going pop, just look how Geffen reacted.
Raphy23 Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 I’ve never even heard of Jewel until today. But now I know that she lied about being poor, and also went pop and flopped. 1

I used to really be into her music, she has the most beautiful lyrics, but some stuff made me not listen to her, the fake poor and how she threated her fans with ultimate coldness. I remember some while ago she would make a selection of fans to go meet her backstage. A mature woman was so emotional saying her music saved her life and she would just stand there staring and saying stuff like "oh, uhum", then she went to a TV show and said she hated giving fans a hug because they were always sweaty. I dont know this cemented in my mind she is a fake cold *****. But she has artistry, she is Fiona Apple level of lyrics but in a different outlook. Now u know! Lol
Mornings Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 This song is an absolute diamond in a sea of sludge. Do I need to post and after example?

Sia’s transition to pop is honestly insane to me. She spent 10 years in the underground scene writing sad ballads and then switched to radio pop and was walking with all the biggest names in the industry
