If Tyla's Water was Rihanna's R9 lead single...

It's hard not to hear Rihanna all over this smash song rising up the charts globally as we speak (top 10 in the UK,  Australia,  Ireland, Tyla's native South Africa and already charting in the US).

If Rihanna released this as the lead single from R9, would it be as big as Work? She did say the new album would have a strong dancehall influence and I wouldn't be surprised if there were some Afrobeats sounds either.

Glad Tyla is getting this moment with the song, but it sounds like a smash and would have been a hit with Rih as well. Would have probably topped the charts especially seeing how weak the chart is nowadays.

Probably not. Tyla, like most of the younger African female artists, is just inspired by Rih.

the song’s cute and Rih would body it but it’s way too basic for a comeback after 7 years :rip:

Yeah, I feel the same. It's a cute bop (although not even my fave song from Tyla), but we need something stronger for Rih's comeback.

exactly, atp she needs to either come back with something earth shattering or at least something more out of the box/new/experimental for her, not with a cute Work-type summer bop

I think this song was destined to be a hit regardless but would have been a multi-week #1 smash with Rihanna.

when rih finally decides to comeback her best choice is to release the album with no previous single and let tiktok/streaming decide what is the single.

i know that before anti she has been more of a hitmaker than an album artist but still. cuz nothing she releases as a single will be considered strong enough. or groundbreaking enough. afterall it's just a track, its hard to be THAT groundbreaking.

well this song is a little weak for her comeback single, but it still would have been a hit. She should definitely have some songs with these tropical vibes on the album... even her old "if it's loving that you want" song is going viral, we need a summer hit for the next summer

Sounds more Tinashe than Rihanna imo. And honestly this song really isn't anything special. She's a cute girl, but it's giving 2020s Natalie La Rose.

As a comeback from 7 years? Hell to the no. Too basic. I want something LIFE-changing from rihanna. This song is also very youthful, not something i want rihanna to still be doing at this point of her career tbh.

It would've smashed muuuuuch harder than it already is.

The chorus is great but I would want different verses if Rihanna was on it.

And like some others have stated, R9's lead pretty much needs to be the next Thriller in order to match the expectations.

and this is exactly why she hasn't released anything. no matter how good the song is, it just won't live up to the expectations.

No it's kinda weak.

Every song on r9 should be a classic smasha at this point

good point, no matter what she releases people will complain so might as well surprise release the whole thing to get it out of the way

Absolutely. It will be the case with whatever she releases. I don't think it should be too left field either for a comeback but also not too safe and basic.
