Congratulations to @stupidjock and @JonginBey on your Golden Hit Tokens - your song was my personal favourite of the week, so I'm glad to see the other judges saw in it what I did! Congratulations to hurricane, too - you were a very close second for me (not biased whatsoever) so I'm thrilled to see you claim another #1 smash hit. Just so you know, I will be cashing in my writing credit and appending "Parasite" by hurricane326 ft. Aurora to the deluxe edition re-release of my greatest hits collection, First Place: The #1s. I also loved your collab @Hey Dude and @Hug and was really pleased to see a few of you took the rare opportunity to collaborate with another writer, and both teams smashed it! I'd also like to congratulate @punisher, @Legend E, and @fountain on your wonderful submissions. Ranking and scoring with such diverse entries is always difficult, because what may rank last one week could just as easily dominate in another, as I feel would have been the case here. I'm so looking forward to seeing what each of you come up with in the finale. Bring your absolute A-game. Jackson leaked the building charts to me earlier and when I tell you it's a nail-biter... Galah Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Also, below are some fun facts about the "Parasite" verse I wrote, which contributed to one of the #1 songs this round, since there was some discourse earlier in the thread about what some of the lyrics meant. "Parasite" was actually a scrap I lifted from a songwriting folder where I used to save my Platinum Hit entries prior to Google Docs. The document is dated December 9th, 2016... which makes it 7 years old in a few days! I most likely wrote it during Round 1 of Diamond Hit based on the timeframe, although it's so long ago, I honestly can't recall. I ended up submitting a song called "Snowflake Secrets" for that round, which... peaked at #8 with a score of 7.375. So hurricane ended up doing a lot better than I originally did! The original verse was also a little different from the final version I modified and included in the challenge: Quote “Parasite” Verse 1 I’m a moonseed chardonnay Mountain laurel laced bouquet Rhubarb pie baked with the leaves Chlorine carried by the breeze You’re the prey inside my web I’m the voice inside your head I’m the pill you’ll overdose You’re the vessel; I’m the host I decided to switch the perspective of the narrator from being the parasitic person to being affected by the parasitic person, and also rewrote the final lyric to something I liked more and felt made more sense. Thinking back, I believe my original idea for this song/verse was to depict something that seems harmless or even pleasant (a glass of wine, a bouquet of flowers, a slice of freshly baked pie, etc.) which is actually toxic and sinister beneath the surface. The controversial "moonseed" is a flowering plant where both the leaves and fruit resemble those of grapes, and confusion can be dangerous as moonseed fruit is poisonous. In a similar vein, mountain laurels are a pretty albeit poisonous flower, rhubarb leaves are toxic to humans, and of course chlorine gas is highly toxic. In short: no, it would be highly inadvisable to attempt to make moonseed chardonnay! The song was clearly meant to have a darker vibe, and in retrospect feels like the opposing viewpoint to another song which I wrote prior to this, "Silhouettes", which depicts a lover appearing to be something pleasant, but actually being something negative, detrimental, or harmful. Well, that was a fun deep dive into my past! I really thank hurricane for giving this scrap a new life and making something really great out of it. 1
