Kern Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 Is there a language you would like to learn? Are you learning a new language now - if yes then which language is that and why are you learning it? I'm thinking about doing MA in English to be able to teach it in the future. But I also wanted to learn a new language but can't decide. I was thinking Spanish or something less common like Czech.
DuffLavigne Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I've been trying to learn Spanish since the last few months, casually though, so I'm not treating it like a priority. I've been using Duolingo - I would say it's not that great, because it feels more like a game to me. That being said, I did learn a lot of new vocabulary and could probably construct some simple sentences. Apart from this, I listen to Spanish music and attempt to translate the lyrics on my own. Also watch some Spanish-language films from time-to-time. 1
Attitude Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I've been using Duolingo to learn basic Japanese, but I fell off after 2 months.

Outlaws Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I am learning hungarian (currently I'm at level B1) since my boyfriend is hungarian and I lived there for 3 years. It's so, so interesting.

Nini Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I can speak Czech. I always wanted to learn French, but I'm too lazy to even begin.

I live in a neighbouring country (Ukraine) and our languages are pretty similar so it wasn't that hard. + It's a very popular language here, and a lot of people learn it too, so I thought why not? Maybe I'll get back to it later
Virgos Groove Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I've been trying to learn French through Duolingo for 3.5 years now, but I always end up breaking my streak. I would love to learn Mandarin or Arabic too.
HEAVYONIT Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 Moved to Spain to become bilingual in English/Spanish and now I’m learning Italian because I just got dual American-Italian citizenship through ancestry.
John Slayne Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I've been doing Polish on duolingo for 2 years but it's not cutting it anymore. I need to interact with the language more. I'm happy to hear any recommendations on music, films, shows, online newspapers, etc.
Pendulum Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 (edited) I got A2 in Czech this summer from a summer course but it's sort of difficult to continue upwards with solo studying. 53 minutes ago, Nini said: I can speak Czech. Escape Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I downloaded Duolingo and started Japanese from beginner level. It went really well until came the Hiragana lessons. That ain't so easy.

To learn a language you need to understand why words are pronounced like that, why grammar structures are like that etc. it’s like math. That’s why for Polish I would just suggest finding a course book for beginners and learn from that + italki for occasional help and conversation + some polish media like YouTube channels I guess I can recommend some later but I’ll have to think about it
