Facts. Dont worry tho, jlo is gonna get her due soon 1
glacier76 Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 The idea that Laura Dern was somehow better is laughable. And Bombshell, Jojo Rabbit and Richard Jewel were awful too. Florence Pugh was the only one worthy but one could argue that she certainly does not play a 13 year old believably. 2
teresaguidice Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 without any context? probably not. but considering laura dern won for marriage story and scarlett johanssan got nominated for jojo rabbit and margot robbie for bombshell, jlo's definitely could've and should've gotten in over them. 1

But even with context (and knowing how the Academy works), Bombshell was competing for two acting categories (and a locked MU winner), Marriage Story was a BP contender and critics darling, Jojo Rabbit was a BP contender and screenplay frontrunner, Kathy Bates is Kathy Bates (in an Eastwood film), and Little Women was also a BP contender and critics darling. Like I said, Hustlers wasn't enough of an awards player or critics success to push JLo into undeniable territory. And the performance itself, while good, is a bit underwhelming and lacks the "big" scene that the Academy likes.

But that's what I'm saying. Ana, Kirsten, Andra gave tour de fource lead actressing performances. JLo's was pretty underwhelming and with the rest of the factors we've discussed (e.g. her reputation, the film not being an awards player, the film not being a critics darling or having festival buzz, missing BAFTA), it's really not a surprising snub either way you look at it.
truthteller Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 (edited) No. She had a good performance by her standards and the cast that surrounded her but it’s still monotone and lifeless. It’s not hard to fathom whether she won those local/regional awards and got nominated for some other awards just because of her celebrity status. Edited October 16, 2023 by truthteller
Antikythera Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 (edited) No, jlo isva joke, she always act the same. Someone who deserves an oscar? Glenn Close Edited October 16, 2023 by Antikythera
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted October 16, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted October 16, 2023 Constance Wu was the real snub. A revelatory performance and the best part of the movie, completely and unfairly overshadowed. 1 1
glacier76 Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 A film directed by a woman where the characters were not traumatized by their work and instead took charge in their circumstances was not considered prestige cinema? Hold the presses! 2
Diet Pepsi Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I’m not even a JLO fan but she BODIED that role, 100% deserved an oscar nom 1

Dont worry tho, jlo is gonna get her due soon She should start by having Ben secure her some (actual) supporting roles in promising projects because that’s the only way she’d have a shot. Looking at her filmography, she hasn’t done a single supporting roles since the 90s. Maybe that was a mistake.
Achilles. Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 She was better than Margot Robbie in Bombshell, but there were many much worse snubs in this category that year so I don’t feel remotely bad about her missing. Cho Yeo-jeong, Parasite Jang Hye-jin, Parasite Lee Jung-eun, Parasite Park So-dam, Parasite Zhao Shuzhen, The Farewell Could have been a lineup in and of itself. Going purely by what did get nominated, though, I actually kinda like the lineup. Bates was solid with a big scene or two, Johansson was the best thing about her film with a great presence, Pugh was strong (even if she did strain credulity in the “young” scenes), and Dern was iconic. 1
Valance Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 she playing herself (alpha female)) so not really
