When I was in the first grade of elementary school I was already reading like a professional, I competed with the whole school and won a first place diploma. I don't understand why I was already reading like that if reading was never inculcated at home :psyduck:

It’ll get worse as public education is A) scapegoated in culture wars and B) privatized through voucher schemes that siphon money away from education to shareholders. And it should be to no one’s shock that this movement (at least in the US) is being spearheaded by billionaires (ie Betty DeVos).

Nothing new but the efforts to undercut public schools are getting more desperate. An education teaches people empathy and analysis/critical thinking to examine their surroundings. There is a reason why Ronald Reagan was smearing the idea of an “educated proletariat” when students organized antiwar protests in the 60s.

Having worked customer service for a while, it honestly seems true :deadbanana2:

I'm continually blown away by how many grown adults are barely functional. :deadbanana2:

This wouldn't be at all surprising to me, if true. It's all caused by a combination of factors: overburdened, mistreated and underpaid teachers, COVID disrupting the already strained learning process, disadvantaged youth not having access to "good" schools or extracurricular activities and the amount of distractions we generally have in life today and conservatives trying to generally stifle the learning process.

It's horrifying how many political ads, from Republicans, talk about taking certain elements of learning out of schools. People are just becoming generally inadequately educated.

I'm pretty sure for a college grad I still read at 6th grade level :bibliahh:

That’s sad af. I’m so glad I got the education when I did and I’m out of school. :skull:

Things like this are incredibly concerning. I browse r/teachers sometimes and so many of them say their students simply cannot pay attention or retain information anymore and are almost all failing classes. It sounds boomer’d to say but I genuinely think TikTok is rotting brains.

Why are conservatives lashing out at public schooling so hard now anyway? I mean, I can think of a few overarching agendas, but what is their argument?

I’m going to admit my biggest takeaway from this was how this teacher wasn’t discovered already and probably fired. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened yet.

Either no one from his school recognizes him or no one ratted him out.

It's a thing in Germany, too. I read an article about it yesterday. I guess it's a problem in many countries worldwide.

I used to work in a Nachhilfe, and it’s scary how many kids cannot follow simple patterns. And I don’t think it helps that modern textbooks are horrendous and try to trick kids into learning, which only ends up confusing them more. And they just get pushed along until they reach Oberstufe, where they are expected to suddenly write perfect essays solving intense political conflicts. Which they can’t handle.

It seems that there are a growing number of countries where the government actually wants to dumb down their population, because unintelligent people question the manipulation less and they are easier to control.

I am not one bit surprised, when these kids are going home after school and are watching TikToks... Not to mention using their school tablets to play games. Education in the US is doomed, yet teacher are underpaid and under-appreciated.

Conservatives have typically argued for less government restrictions, so their arguments against public schooling guidelines go along with this “government overreach”

In reality, it’s because those with college degrees tend to vote Democrat and those with just high school education tend to vote Republican so this is an attempt to keep more voters long term.
