Staryu's barely "crits" (I'm having a day but getting this over with for y'all <3)

Spoiler

ATRL Username - idk I felt like you just typed a narration of what was happening on the screen in the video :deadbanana2: it was a very lowkey performance if that, but I know it's Bea so I guess that's on brand. I like when she drank the wine, power ***** moves bebe rexha gif.

Auburn - What in the hell is Chris Rock wearing at the start of this video :ahh: I feel like this was an interesting performance to choose, it's obviously an important subject for Janet, she really gets into it, her emotions and vulnerability during the performance do help to enhance the song.

Erikills - This video has a bit of everything, violence, sex, drugs, drinking, arson, all things more interesting than the song itself so.. I'd say this does enhance the song for sure :clap3:

NLTM - I do love SZA's movements/hand gestures during this performance, and her vocals ofc. I feel like this is a song I've mostly overlooked too, but this performance made me want to take another listen to the album version.

Psycho - I'm very familiar with this performance b/c of w/e game I played with as Carly ider tbh but this always stood out as one of her top performances to me. I feel like All That is a song that really benefits from a good live performance too, everything works here, Carly, Dev, the background singers all enhance the song for me.

uvie - Yas love this song and performance, the visuals are a great touch although the sun rising does make me think of The Lion King opening as well but that's just my disney gay brain.

WHTS - Love the audience interaction elements, definitely a way to enhance a song, I also love Chappell's energy during the chorus especially and the last minute or so, I know I would have  had fun in that crowd (also b/c I love this bop)

SHELVEN'S CRITIQUES

Spoiler

ATRL Username – Beatopia – The Perfect Pair

On the one hand, I really like the attention to detail throughout your explanation and the creativity of trying to tie subtle aspects of the video to the larger theme on the song. On the other hand, the hyper-specificity you centre your explanation around sometimes feels like a stretch and I’m left not fully convinced that these small moments in the performance are enough to truly elevate the song. Overall, though, after reading the other entries from this round and then coming back to yours, I think you did a better job than most of clearly hitting the “elevation” aspect of the theme, so this works better for me on a re-read than it did when I first read it.

_______________________________________________________

Auburn – The Velvet Rope – What About

I think the first half of your explanation is much stronger than the second. Your first two paragraphs directly and convincingly hit the theme, showing us how Janet’s specific performance choices add a layer to the song that you can’t get from just listening to it. The last two paragraphs feel less fleshed out by comparison – they feel more like you’re just telling us why you like the song/performance, and not why those aspects of the performance add something compared to the studio version of the song.

_______________________________________________________

EriKills – Trouble – Trouble

You definitely understood the specific nature of the theme with this explanation. Basically from start to finish, you provide convincing and specific reasons not just of why you like the video, but why the video adds something to the song. I don’t think you needed to spend as much time as you did summarizing the video (we’re watching them ourselves, after all), but despite that, you at least made sure to keep coming back to the reasons for why those parts of the video elevate the song. As a sidenote, while it didn’t hurt your entry, in the future you don’t necessarily need to open by telling us why you didn’t pick a different song, unless the nature of theme specifically calls for that.

_______________________________________________________

Not Like The Movies – CTRL – Normal Girl

This is a well written explanation from start to finish, and your passion for both this song and this specific performance definitely shine through here. Your reasons for why the performance elevates the song are all logical, but they often feel too abstract and not sufficiently tied to this specific song. The thesis of your entry is essentially “the performance makes the song more dramatic, emotional and intense”, which meets the theme on a surface level, but doesn’t feel quite as fleshed out as several other entries this round that drew on more specific points that apply particularly to their chosen song.

_______________________________________________________

Psycho – Emotion – All That

This entry falls into a similar boat as Movies’ for me. It’s clear you have a genuine enjoyment for this performance and you provide some solid reasons for why it’s a good performance. But ultimately it feels more like you’re just explaining why it’s a good performance instead of explaining why this specific song gets elevated by this specific performance. Your final sentence feels fairly generic and like it could apply to literally any song, so I wish you had spent more time embedding the elevation aspect throughout your explanation instead of just reserving it for one sentence at the end.

_______________________________________________________

ultraviolence.xx – RAVEN – Enough For Love

Not Jimmy Fallon of all people having to teach me it’s not pronounce Kah-LEE-lah. Anyways, this was a bit of a risky approach since you essentially tie your entire argument to one small and simple part of a performance, but I think it works pretty well. You keep your explanation very focused, and it’s more convincing as a result. I think what elevates this is that you acknowledge the simplicity of your reasoning and lean into it as another reason for why it actually elevates the song. I still think I would have added at least one other substantive point to your explanation instead of relying 100% on a background screen, but overall I do think you met the theme in a convincing way.

wehavetostan – The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess – Femininomenom

I think you do a good job overall of explaining why this specific song is elevated by the type of performance the artist has put on. There was a real risk that your focus on the crowd chanting aspect would come across as generic (since arguably every song feels better when a crowd is singing along), but you made it work by tying it to the specific nature of this song being a cry for a new feminine movement. What would have elevated this more for me, though, is if you had leaned in a bit more directly into the unity aspect of everybody singing along together, instead of your ending which veers closer to a more generic point about how people like using concerts to vent about their own experiences.

ELEMENT'S CRITIQUES

Spoiler

@ATRL Username - Beatopia - The Perfect Pair

I think you did the best that you could with this challenge. You probably had the hardest time finding a performance that really took your song to the next level. The subtle details that you called out were sufficient enough. I didn't feel too much of an elevation, but it does capture the appropriate mood.

@Auburn - The Velvet Rope - What About

This was the strongest performance of the round 100%. I think your essay could have been stronger... so I'm in a situation where I would give you like a 10 for the performance itself but maybe an 8 for the write-up. I think you missed out on a few opportunities to strengthen your argument - for example, the dramatic lighting. I did enjoy the parts that you highlighted, showcasing a contrast between vulnerability and necessary aggression.

@EriKills - Trouble - Trouble

I was left kind of neutral on this entry. Nothing in the video really enhanced the song for me despite your decent explanation. The lyrics were pretty self-explanatory, and while it was nice to have some visuals supporting them, they weren't essential.

@Not Like The Movies - CTRL - Normal Girl

I agreed with many of the points in your entry - the performance itself was great and added pizzazz and drama to the song. I do wish that you had some more specificity in your essay. You make a lot of generalized statements. "Creating a new aura" - what is the aura? There were "stylistic changes" and "ad libs" - give me some examples with timestamps. It started to border on a bullet point list.

@Psycho - Emotion - All That

This was a strong recap of the performance, but it did not really achieve the main goal of the challenge prompt - which was to display how the song was elevated by the live performance. That explanation is relegated to the final sentence. The performance itself was fine but I didn't really find myself intrigued or gagged by it. Like it was pretty much aligned with the studio version for me.

@ultraviolence.xx - Raven - Enough for Love

A lovely take on this challenge, and I think a slightly stronger example of "subtle" enhancements to the song than The Perfect Pair. The ambience was simplistic but well done, allowing her vocals to shine. I wish there had been a little more time spent on highlighting the vocal performance as well.

@wehavetostan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Femininomenon

You did a solid job of tying back this live performance to very specific enhancements made for this song, as well as highlighting the audience's connection to the lyrics. Calling out specific examples/timestamps was very helpful in strengthening your argument. The live crowd energy was palpable and a unique perspective within this round. Some of the moments were a bit fleeting to be perfect representations, but overall, I think this was successful.
