cyberpunkgoth Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 do you do that? or you just turn off completely from the music too?
Popular Post LustSpell Posted October 9, 2023 Popular Post Posted October 9, 2023 (edited) I can do it, but it really depends on the level of severity. If it's something egregious like rape, sexual assault, etc, then I cannot ignore it. But for example if it's a problematic action that doesn't necessarily hurt anyone but themselves (Lana's QFTC, Ariana homewrecking queen, Charli being insufferable) then I can easily separate the art and move on with my life Edited October 9, 2023 by LustSpell 17
Bey_Rihstan Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 Depends on what they did. I can't listen to Trey Songz & R. Kelly's sex driven music knowing it was created with nonconsensual encounters as the inspiration. But I can listen to some Chris Brown songs as Rihanna has forgiven him idk 2
Pheromosa Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 (edited) Lady Gaga has done unforgivable things but I love Replay Edited October 9, 2023 by Pheromosa 2 3
Mornings Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 I totally separate my personal feelings from works of art. Paul Gauguin is a renowned French Post-Impresionist painter, whose most well known painting depict his stay in French Polynesia where he had relationships with multiple adolescent girls with whom he fathered chlidren. His actions are disgusting. His paintings are compelling. His work shouldn't be burned or expelled from public viewing or teaching. The history of his personal life, However, is essential to the conversation surrounding his work. you can critique work as part of a time and place, condemn the actions of the artist, and dislike the work itself, while also acknowledging the impact and the link in the historical chain it represents. 2
PinkLamborghini Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 I don't listen to male artists so it's not a big deal for me. A lot of the divas I listen to have cluster B personality disorders, but they aren't rapists or abusers. 1
State of Grace. Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 I'd say it depends on what said artist has said or done. I can't really do it when there's sexual assault, racism, queerphobia, etc involved. It is no secret that the industry is full of problematic people and every single celeb mentioned on this forum has done/said at least one or two questionable things. It took me a while to actually accept that none of my faves are perfect innocent angels, but I think it's important to always ask yourself whether they have apologized and shown any growth/change throughout the years. It's a personal choice of what lines you create at the end of the day. We all have different thresholds, but if you are really "separating the art from the artist" then you should at least acknowledge that you are well aware of whatever they’ve said/done and that you still enjoy the music regardless instead of just giving that excuse. Maybe don't support them financially by buying merch, CDs, etc. Sometimes your ability to "separate the art from the artist" says more about your lack of concern for the issues than being some achievement to be proud of. 1
BrokenMachine Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 It depends, I use to forgive more bands than solo artists, like, when the Melanie Martinez controversy happened I kept listening to her music, but nowadays it just doesn't sit right with me. As other example I got into Brand New some years ago and I loved their music. After some time I learnt about shady stuff their lead singer did and I just thought 'oh, that's a shame', like, I don't support the wrong stuff he did, but at the same time I connect to the music of the whole band, so I haven't stopped listening to them

Devin Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 Depends but yes I can separate the two. Artists like Kanye, R. Kelly, etc. I had to stop streaming completely.

Madonna can sometimes be a mean girl, MJ was a chomo. Forgiveness is free, give all you can.
dumbsparce Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 It's easy to say you don't listen to R. Kelly or Chris Brown when you don't listen to r&b in general but at the same time have no problem listening to all the songs Dr Luke has produced for most girls atrl lives for. You can't pick and choose on this one, so I chose to not give a **** otherwise I'd be left with no music to chill to. 3 1
KLatz Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 I've always been able to separate the artist from the art when the artist becomes too problematic for my own personal liking. I can't deny good music even if I find the artist despicable, especially since some of the music is essential to a genre or pop culture
Mr. Mendes Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 As most have said, it really depends on what the person has done. I can't and won't support an abuser, rapist, or something like that. But if they're just messy or say dumb ****, then yeah I can just enjoy the music and not linger on the person. Basically, if their "crimes" are victimless messiness sure. But if we're getting into actual crimes with people getting hurt and scarred, then it's a no go.
thetea Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 normally i won't stream an artist who has said or done questionable things. if i really like songs or albums of theirs then I have an ipod classic so i just download their music onto there and listen to their music through the ipod.
Funnyfatty Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 “Their art” as if the music they put out today is art music today is just horrible lyrics with some beats and i can live without that. And i feel like there are really evil and ignorant people out there calling themselves artists. I feel like going back to the 90s and 00s nowadays.
Cheers Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 My fave, Bizarrap, is unproblematic and artistic so I cannot relate im sorry

AxelFox Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 I have no issue with that for the most part. The only times when I cannot properly do it is when the artist had died young. Like, I love Selena's and Allyiah's music but I just cannot listen to their songs without thinking of the tragedy of their deaths and I start feeling really awkward and just play something else.
