"You just have to be like, 'I don't care what people think,'" he told "CBS Mornings" co-host Gayle King in an exclusive interview. "'Cause people are gonna see it and they're gonna see it being a lower figure than my other records and be like, 'Oh, he's on the way out.'" -Ed

He can never have another hit again, he's already set for life from his music that he released last decade

Arts not the charts

No Elton, Ariana, Blackprint to try to boost sales.

honestly that's a good thing. It's not like he needs any more money and if he still wants to earn more, he can simply keep touring. He'll be fine and I hope he really gave/gives up the chart obsession

I'm sorry, I find this a bit ironic... Wasn't he the one selling 99p CD singles to score a #1 in the UK? So he's now saying he doesn't care about sales?

But anyway, good for him, let the music speak for itself I guess. Quality or quantity right?

Ed is used to flopping then smashing again with a pop album, this isn't unusual for him and I wouldn't say he's on his way out yet.

He makes hundreds of millions of dollars every tour despite the tickets being relatively cheap (<$90 on average). He doesn't give a **** about album sales.
At this point, he's just releasing album so he can tour again.

People need to leave him alone. He might be a tad smug, but he doesn’t seem like a bad guy at all. His wife went through cancer while his last album was flopping and everyone was dragging him. It just feels cruel now.

I agree - there are many many people in entertainment who are openly worse people than him. He seems overall like a decent guy - no one ever has a bad word to say about him that interacts with him. He also has some GREAT songs when he does it right - if a pop girl sang shape of you we’d say it’s an iconic bop lbr

they say things like this only after tanking

The way this site will gas up viral fad acts with a dozen cowriters & producers on a track built around licensed samples/interpolations & lyrics about getting their cheeks clapped, sniffing drugs, etc & save all the vitriol for a singer-songwriter that actually writes his own music.. baffling. I’m not even a fan but he’s not selling overpriced tickets to hear backtrack. If we’re gonna root for somebody to flop, let’s start with the truly talentless ppl

Suddenly he doesn't care about sales now that he's flopping :rip:

He used to be VERY brave and got humbled :)

He had tremendous success for so long, it doesn't really matter if he underperforms commercially now. People (especially users here) have this weird idea that you have to be successful for multiple decades or you're a flop. Really messed-up way of thinking.

Is not really that, he used to be VERY brave with what he said and made jokes of artists "flopping". It's not about what you are saying.

Yeah he got 4 undeniable classics out of 2 eras (TOL, Photograph, Shape of You & Perfect), that’s more than most artists got across their entire career. He has even more songs that are hugely known but those 4 are like if you don’t know them where you been lol

Didn’t Taylor say something like her and Ed compete with each other on the charts & who sells more? Or was it him who said it
