Nicole Scherzinger reflects on time with Pussycat Dolls

Pussycat Dolls begin as a burlesque act before founder-choreographer Robin Antin negotiated a record deal, bringing in Scherzinger to front the band, which was rounded out by dancer-performers Kimberly Wyatt, Melody Thornton, Jessica Sutta, Ashley Roberts and Carmit Bachar.

"Our group was never set up like the Spice Girls. Our group was set up where I would be the quarterback, and I would lead us," Nicole Scherzinger, 45, recalls of their singular set-up. "The girls are extremely strong, talented dancers, and I had to work hard to be able to stand next to them."

Despite the group's ups and downs over the years, Scherzinger — who has said she recorded the majority of the vocals on the albums — says she looks back on her time with the Pussycat Dolls fondly.

"I always used to be made to feel like . . . I don’t know, not ashamed, but . . . I’m very proud that the albums are my music. I put the work in after all these years, and that's OK that I have the credit because everybody has their own strengths. And this is what I bring to the table," she says. "Those were world-class pop records that had many No. 1s around the world. And I love my girls, and I’ll always have love for them — I only wish them the best."

She's right. I don't really get why people hate on her so much when she was literally hired to be the singer. The rest of them are dancers not singers (apart from Melody who I do feel a bit bad for).

PCD was only hot for 1 and a half era tho...so I don't get the fuss to talk about them... I mean their 2nd album didn't even get a gold plaque

I think for the fact it was marketed as a group/band not 3 singers and 3 backup dancers.

kinda crazy how she was made out to be some control freak that wanted to be the main focus of the group when she was literally just doing her job and what the label/group required of her :rip:

They should've let all the girls sing with Nicole as the lead singer. I wish they never broke up. One of the best western girl groups ever. I never cared about her solo career. Some singers like Nicole work better in a group than solo.

So why did the reunion fall through?

Marketing/communications is the reason why it all backfired on Nicole. The GP was used to the Spice Girls, TLC, DC (who in their own way also had to deal with pretty similar stuff), etc. They were never able to successfully explain their rationale.

Goddamn, I remember the singles from their sophmore album so I thought the album was at least platinum :rip:

I wonder how different the trajectory of Nicole’s career and criticism against her would have been had the group been called  “Nicole & the Dolls” or something

people judged them as a normal girl-group and that’s where all the dragging and nicole hate came from

Because the world doesn't revolve around the US? That album still went platinum in a bunch of other countries :skull: and the singles were still known even if they weren't chart smashes.

In the US, yes. But WW they were staples. Especially in Europe where Nicole was successfully able to get herself a solo career with big hits.

Also the album is definitely Gold eligible in the US and probably at 750K with SEA.

People always wanna hate on Nicole.. makes no sense. Tons of groups have lead singers. This is not uncommon at all. They hired 5 dancers and 2 singers. It's not her fault.

What did robin do

It never felt right to me how the label treated both Nicole and Melody.

Nicole is incredibly talented and deserves her flowers. She's got the abilities but suffered from poor luck and timing/decisions.

I don't think they are coming back in the foreseeable future now, especially with Robin and Nicole suing each other.
