SZA is known for writing moody, sensual, and highly emotional songs. Carly Rae Jepsen writes music about the rush of falling in love. Taylor Swift’s lyrics are easily identifiable as hers for their storytelling and confessional tone. Mariah’s vocabulary shines in her pen game. Nicki’s lyrics are heavy on puns and word play that would sound unnatural coming from anyone else. How would you describe Beyoncé’s signature songwriting? Her style is very rapid-fire, with twice as many syllables as most songs written for that particular time signature, with mostly assonant rhymes (only vowels rhyme). She employs mostly comparisons and metaphors as rhetorical devices. As regards subject matter, she mostly writes about her personal experiences and conveys a sense of confidence and strength in most of her material. She loves using repetitions to show case her vocal productions.
