madonnafan18 Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 Paula Cole has spoken about a similar situation with her former label, Warner Bros. So many artists are in similar situations and it's sad.

They gave her absolute DUST for promo with this album. Kreay Baby, go on tour or something. Book some festivals next summer, I'll show up 1

Her debut album cost $1 million? What were they thinking? For an artist who barely had a Hot 100 charting song. I doubt her producers were THAT expensive. Was this also spent on marketing? Rihanna's Loud album cost about $18,000 per track(this is with a writing camp of about 40 people) for 11 songs. Edited September 21, 2023 by Junipero 2

Often there is a bit of bidding war for those artists. This was the early days of viral youtube videos so labels didn't know what to expect. The thing about an advance is that you don't have and you usually don't spend it all on the album. You are free to keep all the money left over that you didn't spend on the album. It's extremely common for artists to just live off the advances . Label will just continue to take all money from the sales/streams of the album you got the advance for until you paid off the advance. You don't have to repay them money outside those sales/streams. Lauryn Hill got a multi millionaire advance for her second album which she never finished but she got to keep the advance. Kreayshawnblew through the money because she had mental health problems and drug addiction. Her team would book sessions for her and she would just use drugs and so she would still get charged for the time. 1 1

But the only money going to Sony is the money being currently generated from Gucci Gucci and other songs on her 2012 album on streaming. Gucci Gucci only has 36 million streams on Spotify so likely isn't generating much money at all. She doesn't need to pay Sony any money outside that. She doesn't have to pay them anything when she tours or releases new music. Sony gave her an 1 million dollar advance for her 2012 album and she admitted that instead of recording music "So I’d be sitting in the studio, drinking lean, smoking weed, getting drunk, not recording anything for a week, not knowing that all that was $25,000[for the studio time]." No way she got a 1 million dollar check (?) Azealia is so right about the hip hop industry

She got a 1 million dollar check since the lables thought it would be easy to turn viral acts into proper A-listers. She wasted the check .https://www.stereogum.com/2147613/kreayshawn-gucci-gucci-anniversary-interview/interviews/tracking-down/ 1 1

It doesn't cost that much to produce an album. Artists are able to keep the full advance no matter how much they spend on the album. They basically get paid upfront before the album is even made and then decide how to much to spend on the album. In return, they only start recieving royalties from the album after they paid off the advance. Let's say Kreasyawn gets 20% of royalties. She will only pay off her advance of $1 million after the album has made $5 million in revenue for the label (20% of 5 million in 1 million). After she has paid off her advance, she will receive 20% moving forward e.g $1 million for the next $5 million in revenue. Kreashawn admitted to basically wasting hundred of thousands of advance on drugs. She doesn't earn any money from Gucci Gucci since she hasn't paid back her advance but the label doesn't touch any of the money she gets from other ventures. Royalties are low since most artist's albums flop and aren't close to paying off the advance. The label is gambling on finding an artist that will generate $50 million off an $1 million advance. zz19 Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 I remember one time I went to a Kreayshawn concert (don’t judge me - it was free ), and just as she was about to come on stage, someone went on the mic to say Kreayshawn wouldn’t be performing that night, and that her sister would be singing some of her songs instead. 8 1
KatyPrismSpirit Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 She is not going to pay that money off but at the same time, where did the money they gave her go and what was it spend on?

Alex Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 I think Ryn Weaver is in a similar situation with "The Fool" and Interscope. These labels are evil. 1
Gojira Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 People don't always realize that the labels pay for pretty much nothing. Everything gets charged back to the artist before they get another cent.
