Olivia Rodrigo owns the masters to SOUR and GUTS. Surprised?

What's the surprise here :skull: we already knew this when Sour was released. Olivia (thanks to what happened to Taylor) made sure that she would own all her masters when she signed.

what's surprising here is she managed to negotiate this deal before her debut. Most of the artists nowadays can't sign in a major record label without giving up their masters. There were rumors that she got bigger offers from other labels but she turned them down because she doesn't have a creative control of her work.

Swifties know the deal by now :thing: And she wasn't some unknown overnight celebrity so she had enough leverage to negotiate it

this is probably true.

there are labels that know how to payola a way (columbia, warner and maybe republic) but most of their artists gets so controlled

on interscope u have investment ofc but u won't have ur way payola'd if u know what i mean. but u have creative freedom

i think it's a nice home for an artist, i like them.

Every music executive in town was interested in signing her after she released her self-written track "All I Want" for HSMTMTS — despite Disney not investing in or promoting it, the downloads alone allowed it to chart and become a success.

It was important for her to sign with a label that viewed her as a songwriter first

No, I’m not surprised; when you know better, you do better!

I think that after taylor, every artist with options is smarter.

And all the artists she copied get paid directly from her account! :pool:

She refuses to be a victim :clap3:

From this generation it seems that only she and Dua were smart to own their masters, Billie in the other case... :chick2:

The thing is, even after the drama, only few have the options to own their masters when signed to major record labels.

yes I am kind of surprised, especially with her being so young/new in the game. Have the ownership of masters become increasingly easy to obtain in recent times or what? If they are, I wonder if it's because the industry claims to not make that much money anymore. It does make one wonder when artists like Prince were willing to battle the entire WB label over his masters for ages and other elder acts were literally dying back in the day over their masters. I guess that's why so many heritage acts are selling their whole catalogs down the river lately. No more big money in owning them?

Yeah that's why i wrote it.

Not many artists were lucky to be getting that option.

Yes, like Olivia, her 2 albums are under Dua Lipa Limited (now called Radical 22 as of April this year) and licensed by Warner.
