Citrus Posted July 9, 2017 Author Posted July 9, 2017 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Episode 4 - Children of the Internet Judges' Critiques Carbon said... Quote Team Phresh Shull I'm a little torn how I feel about this. I think you both did pretty well with the video idea with voice over and chuckled at the content. The homepage image... eh. It looks like reddit. Does it look catered to your demographic? Not really. There's a header and a Dame Rose joke, and that's about it. I don't really care for details like "we lowered the opacity and used a different font" since I don't think it's particularly noticeable, and even looking at these details, I don't see how it's relevant in terms of your demographic? It looks like Faye did a majorty of the work so kudos to you. I think this was a little plain, I'm not disappointed or blown away, but good job to the both of you. Team Lola Lux Yentel Whew, this slayage. This worked especially well since we ALL know women who fit into these tropes, and the small narrative jokes across each of your created characters worked well and made me Caucasian laugh. The random and completely appropriate Gwyneth Paltrow cameo furthered what you were serving. It does sound like Gladys didn't have too much engagement and direction because of time scheduling which is a shame. Fantastic job everyone! Team Stonahma Fence Kii. The best part of your entry were the digs at Chanal and Floppi... and that's about it. I get what angle you were going for with your logo and the whole no edges stuff... but it's just really boring. It just seems totally devoid of character or humor, which is exactly the idea you had, but I don't see how it translates to your demographic - it just screams anti-sjw twitter mess. It feels like you focussed on going after a very specific type of joke rather than what the challenge asked and hoping you could mold it into what you wanted. This isn't your best entry! Team Canalleena This was very refreshing. I like how "gimmickless" this entry is. It's very to the point, exactly what the challenge wanted, and you really served your demographic quite well and is laden in small touches that are apparent, like the fidget spinner in the logo and the emojis. The Minecraft usage was very clever and appropriate, and the video was authentic. It sounds like Alena couldn't contribute much this week which is fine, I think you all did very well this challenge. I'm very impressed and I don't think there is a single dud with any of your fashions this week. Chanel said... Quote Team Challenge Winners Firstly, kudos to you nimrods for somehow finding a way to screw up what was going to be the BEST team lineup without any host interference (pay attention to the natural storylines, girls!). Anyways, I think you- Excuse me? What do you mean I can't see the thread? This is my game, I invented this ****ing game and it would be nothing without me. Sure, give it to the fruit all because Stale Cherry can't handle the fact that she's untalented and underwhelming. I'll be back in two months fresh (something she wishes she understood) and ready to continue cohosting a successful game, but she'll still be what she's always been: a loser chased from Showdown by a cadre of friends who found her as insufferable as the rest of the world always has. Hug said... Quote Team Phresh Shull I’ll start with the tagline that you two have given to your newly rebranded Reddit. I found it to be a dark, but enjoyable, twist on the old saying you took it from, fitting for the demographic if they have a really morbid sense of humor or a death wish! It got a good chuckle out of me, so that’s a good thing. Your example of the website...I did enjoy what little we saw of it (thanks 4 the promo btw x), with things such like the r/warflashbacks and r/Golf being in the trending subreddits being nice little gems for anyone attentive enough to look for them, but Reddit has such a unique sense of humor to it, and its own style of posting that you failed to fully capture, in my opinion. You could have just as well made some mock up posts, either through Photoshop or through script editing in the console, and really captured what a 60+ year old male posting on Reddit would be like. Basically, I wanted more and it was the most lackluster part of the entry for me. The commercial you made for the video was charming and funny. Particularly, I enjoyed that Faye used two different voices in the video...I legit thought it was two different people for a second, and when I realized it was just Faye, I was quite impressed! I didn’t notice at first, but watching the video made me see the Reddit bot had old man hair. A nice touch! The smaller group size (2 compared to 3) seems to have been both a blessing and a curse for you two. It’s a lot easier to bounce ideas off of each other and brainstorm, coming up with some great ideas as two people. However, this also means that there’s generally more work the individual has to do when compared to the groups of three, and with only so much time to get an entry in, I can’t help but feel that there were concepts that were bigger than your execution. In that sense, having a third working team mate would’ve made for less stress when actually making your ideas into an entry. I can’t entirely hold that against you, seeing as the team member quit on you two, but it would also be unfair to give bonus points just because the team was smaller. Team Lola Lux Yentl Like the last group, I’ll start with the slogan. It’s very white mom - about it! For the “post” mockups, I found them to be humorous and enjoyable throughout, but it took me awhile to connect the comments to the pictures sometimes, so the presentation was a bit off on that regard. Would’ve been nice if I didn’t have to struggle to see what comments went with which picture. I’ll give a special section to the DMs and the sponsorships, and I’ll start with the DMs. The DMs served middle aged white woman DRAMA. Give me Real Housewives tea! (thanks for the promo btw x) I love how we got a little bit of info about these girls from the DMs, it gave them some character instead of them all being the same generic white mom. They had different archetypes, which I was so happy to see since it’d be so easy to make them all the same white woman. So now, on to the sponsorship. It seemed extra. I do appreciate going all-out on a challenge, but I feel like a sponsorship from what started as a business proposal wasn’t needed? Like, did Gwyneth Paltrow just strut into that business meeting like “Hi! I’m the celebrity embodiment of middle aged white women and I APPROVE!”? I don’t necessarily think the endorsement was a detriment to your entry, and it had its own charm, but frankly I’d feel the same about your entry whether you had Gwyneth there or not. You also had a section with the testimonials from the mothers, and while I think it’s more realistic than dedicating a quarter of the entry to Gwyneth Paltrow, it still seemed out of place for a board meeting. If I were to take your concept and change it a bit, I would have made it so that the testimonials from the mothers were more like...research data based on demographic, and why changing Facebook to promote itself near solely to middle aged women was the best business decision, with some cute looking graphs and data etc. There’d be potential for some smaller, hidden jokes in there, as well. (sidenote: Thank you for the ***** Yentl translation! It’s a funny gimmick, but quite annoying to read when you’re actually trying to understand her!) I found this entry to be quite a unique approach to the challenge, especially compared to what the others have done, yet I feel like the execution could have been better. I thought that the sudden change from board meeting to...idk, infomercial (given how long it is and the random celeb cameo) was very jarring, and sticking to a singular concept could have really elevated this further.I also think the graphics look a bit...messy. It’s not about the graphics, of course, and points won’t be taken off for that, but it does seem odd for a professional-looking website. I have those few criticisms, but don’t take it too harshly as I very much enjoyed this entry. It was full of creativity and character which was absolutely delightful! Team Stomanoah Alright, so right off the bat, I want to say that I had to look up what demographic you were trying to approach, because “Tumblr Snowflake” isn’t an age group, I don’t believe. So, your slogan is...fitting for your idea. That’s it. Nothing really funny or quirky about it. Your logo is...bland, basic, a tad boring, and I get that’s what you were going for (since you said you didn’t want people cutting themselves on the edges!), but I think a cute bubble text font would’ve done better, maybe even having text guarded with bubble wrap just to really drive the idea of oversensitivity home. (sidenote: I keep seeing the logo text change colors every time I scroll up or down? This optical illusion could be very triggering to someone with (TW) epilepsy.) The commercial you made is where the entry really shines! It felt like an actual parody commercial, as opposed to a cheaply done parody commercial, if that makes sense. I was laughing through the whole thing. A very well done on that. I feel like the entry focused too much on being humorous, and it overshadowed the fact that you were supposed to be targeting young adult women. I never once got that you were aiming for that demographic (maybe should’ve listened to Melanoma?). However, if I were to just gloss over that basic principle, it was a solid enough entry, but I just wish that more was done with the art aspect of deviantART. Team Canelleena Okay, let’s start with the slogan - it’s my favorite one of the bunch! The banner is tacky and low-budget, but craigslist looks like a product of its time, being early internet, so it’s a fit! Personally, I loved the fidget spinner for the ‘o’, as well as the renaming to “Tommyslist”, just to really give it that 12-year-old vibe! Something I found particularly interesting is that, for the most part, you let the entry talk for itself via the layouts on laptops and smartphones. However, something I would’ve liked to see is the little write ups for the things people are selling. You could’ve even done something like make wacky usernames for some of the posters and have them talk like a 12-year-old would talk like on the internet. I found that your rebranding was a cosmetic upgrade for the site, but the overall cheap feel to craigslist has a lot of potential for humor, I think. Your entry is nice to look at, though. (I also like the categories on the side ) Like the last group, though, I believe your strength lies in the commercial for it. However, unlike the last group, I think your commercial also did a better job at targeting your core demographic, being the little boys! (sidenote: Bomb talking like that was a shock to me because that’s not how he sounds when I talk to him ) Your entry was very to-the-point, and as someone who has to read entries, it was appreciated, but I still think there was some room for a bit more of a wink and a nudge to your source material. Still a good entry for the demographic you’re aiming for, though! Looks/Individual critiques Faye Shull: I feel like you got to shine, even in this partner challenge. The video was a definite highlight, not only for Phresh’s writing, but for your delivery and doing two voices! You worked well together, for what it’s worth. You had such a creative way to introduce both of your looks, including using your old drag persona and making your male and female different people...however, I can’t help but feel like it’s closer to costume wear than prom wear, particularly for the male look. I would’ve loved to see a more “wild” look, especially if you’re going to be so daring as to use mythological creatures for your theme, and it wasn’t all the way there for me. The heels on your female look are so...bland. Your dress is huge anyway, and as we’ve learned in the past, you can get away without wearing shoes if your dress is big enough and you copy and paste your entry ad nauseum. Seriously, though, if you’re gonna put the heels in the look, make them cute, even if we wouldn’t actually be able to see them in a completed look. Everything else is fine, albeit the hair choice being tame. (male: 2, female: 2) Phresh Cherry: Your writing on the script was great. It was great seeing a bit of your humor come out in this entry, which I believe is one of your best strengths. Your male look, despite the top hot being ever so slightly off color, is pretty fun, actually. It gives me Willy Wonka on the LOUD world tour. Personally, I think a cane or a bouquet would’ve made it really cute, and people love a good prop! I think I like it more than your female look. Speaking of, your female look is...conventional. I genuinely believe someone would wear that to prom, so it fits the idea, but considering how over-the-top people can go for prom looks, it felt a bit tame. It never hurt to spice things up a bit, particularly with the hair. There are plenty of elegant updos that would really catch the eye and compliment the outfit, but your hair is simple. Drag isn’t really about being simple, and I learned that the hard way. I like the hair piece that matches the jewellry, though...even if I find the jewellry a tad ugly. The heels are also very bland, and like Pes, we wouldn’t be able to see the heels, but if you’re going to go through the trouble of sending in heels, make them some good heels! One other thing I should mention is that your dress left some room to accessorize on the arm area, and you didn’t take that opportunity. Some red gloves that go up past the elbow, in my opinion, would’ve been a nice touch. Lola Cabezas: I’ll be honest, most of the entry felt like you. It was pretty obvious you took the reigns on this challenge, but truthfully, it worked in your favor. Your male look has a lot of personality to it. He’s trashy, he’s sleazy, your mother wouldn’t approve...and that’s why I do! The half casual/half dress up look is telling of the type of guy you’re trying to portray here. I don’t really have anything bad to say, because you got the male look down. The female look feels like it took a similar approach. It has that valley girl going through her rebellious phase going on for it, trashy man and all. You really nailed the aesthetic you were going for. I do kinda think the pigtails are a bit immature, but I suppose that says more about the character you’re trying to portray, rather than your ability to make a look. Gladys Lux Maure: I think it’s really cute that you took inspiration from your real life for the male look. However, I can’t say much more about it except it works for prom. Nothing really daring or enticing going on. Your female look is giving me trashy slut. I mean that as a compliment - I’m a Kesha stan! I think the drawing makes it so the special little details we’d get from pictures wouldn’t be there, but I do love the ruffles on the skirt. Although...since you’re drawing these, you could do anything you want, and I still find the heels boring. The flower is honestly a tad tacky. Luckily, we wouldn’t be able to see the heel most of the time! ***** Yentl: I’ll be honest, you might need to start adding a Yentl-to-English translation in spoiler tags, because I can’t read what the **** you were saying. I’m going to just use my intuition and hope for the best. I find you actually switching the roles a bit to me an interesting idea, so the looks are creative...it’s just that I don’t think they’re very good. The most striking part of the outfit was the almost nude part for the male, and I almost think it would be better if you left it at that and went for the shock factor. There’s otherwise nothing noteworthy about either look, and that’s not a good sign. The heels are also basic, just like everyone else’s. At least you’re in good company. Stone: Your heels are ****ing ugly like everyone else’s. Other than that, I really like this look. The way you decided to accessorize is excellent, and really drives this look for me. A ****ing scepter, bitch?! Gaged. Your male look is fairly conventional, but who can blame you when that’s the bubble society puts men in. I still think you could’ve done something more bold with the male look (but I will admit, the Ray Charles glasses was a CHOICE.) You also thought to add a watch. I liked that touch, at least. Melanoma: Loved your presentation of the looks! The looks themselves are interesting as well. Love the parallels between the two. However, once you remove those wings/feather coats/whatever they are, the male looks plain and the girl looks frumpy. Luckily, I do like the idea of the wings, so you’re safe. <3 P.S look at anyone else’s critiques to find out how I feel about your choice in heels. Noah Fence: Your team entry felt very much your idea and the other two just went with it. I really just imagined you doing most of the work and the other two just nodding their heads wanting to get the entry done. Stan a bit for imprisoned icon T.O.P! Anyway, I love the approach you took for this challenge, and you accessorized well with both looks. It’s a shame there wasn’t a better model for the dress because that girl ain’t rocking it, but it has potential. Also, I don’t think the heels you chose for the female are that ugly, so that’s a major plus! Canela: I loved the video. The name you chose for the character Your male look is eye popping, and considering its a male look, it’s a lot more than I could say for nearly every other entry. You using Ksweezy. I really like the juxtaposition of the cross necklace and the satanic watch. It’s that attention to detail that made me really like this look. The female look...I think the first dress was good enough, honestly. It didn’t need the back, but seeing as you accessorized around the flower idea, I can see why it’s there. I found the accessories were a bit ugly, particularly the choker/necklace and the earrings. It fits, I suppose, but I’m still not much of a fan. Colleen: Ahh I love both the looks, and they work so well together. I don’t have much else to say, except maybe the male’s shoes are ugly. Alena Loves: Taking the pink route for the male was interesting. It’s a simple, but cute look. Passable. The female look feels a bit less concentrated on an idea. The ideas seem more sporadic, and to be honest, I think a pastel blue look would’ve been a nice compliment to the male look. Citrus said... Quote Team Phresh Shull Your work isn’t bad, it’s just underwhelming when put next to the other girls. I know you talked about attention to detail in the screencaps, but I feel like there were so many other little things that you could’ve done. All the top subreddits could’ve been altered to things like r/enemasafter60, r/Libtardz, etc. The video voiceover was cute, even though the script itself was a little lacking. I feel bad that you guys lost a member (RIP Primarina, the first robbed queen of this season), but I wish this end product were better. As to outfits! Faye, love the male prom look and concept but girl we didn’t need a book. Take the time you spent writing that and apply it to the entry, you could’ve just told us it was a Monster Mash prom and we would’ve gotten it. Your female look is highkey Pixel Dark couture, and that’s all I’m gonna say about that. Phresh, your red male suit is cute, if a little circusy. The problem with such a statement male look is that it really overshadows your female look, which is downright subtle when paired alongside your boy drag. Plus, those heels are straight up 27 year old real estate broker from Miami and it ain’t right. The look is basic. Team Lola Lux Yentel I’m not gonna say much because you girls absolutely slayed this. From the banner (We’re Living, We’re Loving, We’re Laughing!), I KNEW that this was going to be a joy to read. It was very smart to frame it in the way you did, because you were given a difficult task since Facebook is largely appealing to the demographic you were assigned. The nuances and quirks that each of these hyphenated mothers has are wonderful, and I love that y’all basically remade Desperate Housewives on social media for this challenge. And it was a GENIUS move to bring in Gwyneth Paltrow, because of ****ing course she’s that kind of person. Lola, your boy drag made me wet and your girl drag brought it up even further. You did that. Gladys, I like that your boy drag is the sorta hunky sorta awkward nerd boy with the big dick who don’t know how to **** so you have to teach him but before you know it he’s spanking you and pulling your hair, whew! You took me back bitch. Your girl look, though, is straight up hoe. Like, that boy couldn’t get a date so he called a Latinx escort service. It’s not that you can’t show body, it’s more than sheer can sometimes make things look cheap, especially when it’s on an early 2000s European clubbing top with an uncoordinatingly classy skirt. Pay attention to what kind of vibe you wanna give in a look and try to make sure all of your pieces contribute to that character you’re building. Wh$re, I’m living for this edgy look you went for. Your boy drag is a fantasy, and the girl look is iconic Annie Hall eleganza. I especially enjoy the androgynous aspects that each of your looks has, it’s very chic. Team Challenge Winners This entry was…a choice. I don’t know which of you made the decision to base your entire entry off of one TumblrInAction joke, but whoever did should be shot. And the rest of you should be hung for not stopping her. There are so many directions you could’ve taken this. You could’ve emphasized fan fiction, done the social progressive thing with more variety, etc. It’s just very…there. Quick shout out to Buddy for having the single laugh line with the photo of Chanel, though. AS to your looks, I love both of Stone’s, even though that dress is ill fitting and loose (just like your hole). The menswear is basic but it works so eh. Melanoma, I was initially against your looks but imagining these on the runway gives me the drama I want. I love that the male pants are loose and slightly billowy. Toot to both. I will say, if you thought (correctly) that the entry was heading in a direction that would be one-note and unfunny, you should’ve been more insistent as opposed to trying to make peace, because now you’re all in front of me with a **** entry and it doesn’t matter what you thought a week ago. Noah, I like the theme you went with, it’s a cute cohesive thing. I don’t feel that the boy coat is as spacey and exciting as the accessories (a marbled violet color would’ve been >>>), but it’s not bad. The dress isn’t particularly special but the hair and theming with the shoes make it a toot. Team Caneleena While I love the business professional fish looks, I’m not quite sure what purpose they serve since only 2/3 of the group has them and there’s no formatting like this is a formal presentation. Shop till your balls drop is hilarious, though I am slightly disappointed there was no rebranding of the Personals section to be about playdates or Call of Duty tags. The Minecraft video is a slay! Is the music Minecraft, as well? Idk it. Overall, great job girls. It was short but it still packed a punch, other teams wish. Canela, your look is sorta Aciid Rose leftover pile, but that means it’s still great. The heels are a little clumpy looking but I like the floral on the back of the dress only. Colleen, kudos to you for changing your look from that god awful Mean Girls tribute. Unless it’s a tribute runway or a specific assignment, pls don’t recreate other looks. Your male look is gorgeous and very designer, although your second is a bit of a letdown because of the tired gold Greek thing. I would’ve liked an even more over the top golden woman on par with your golden man. Alena, your boy look is soft and cute, looking like Farrah Moan as a boy. It’s no stunner, but it’s serviceable. Your girl look is unexpected, and I really enjoy it. The dress is kinda fugly but with that long, gray President Coin weave, it somehow makes sense. I’m living tbh! Ditch those dumpy ass shoes looking like they have marshmallows on them and the Swiffer duster earrings, though.
