Is Taylor not being a sex symbol one of the reasons why she’s so big?

Yes. 10 year old boys can have posters of Taylor all over their bedroom and their parents have nothing to worry about.  It’s just about the songwriting.

I mean she is a very beautiful girl though even if her image isn't sexual. So she's some kinda symbol even if it isn't sex symbol

Like I don't want to discount her songwriting but being a tall, skinny, blonde haired-blue eyed girl has definitely been important to her career especially in the beginning.

Probably partially.

I would venture to guess that if she was far more sexualized, if she was more like 2013 Miley, let's say, that she wouldn't have the broad range of fans that she does. Because of this, she (as a popstar, a celebrity, an image) kind of appeals to everyone who enjoys her music without giving them a reason to question or dislike her for being sexually open. It's unfortunate that people still judge others who are sexual, but that's still very much a fact. Adele fits this as well. Both her and Taylor are inoffensive as a whole, make songs of the accepted love/heartbreak theme (meaning they don't really get political with their music), and represent the "girl next door"  archetype (meaning people like them and aren't threatened by them).

And while someone like Miley was super successful being overly sexual, we saw how that played out in both the media portrayal of her at the time, and in her subsequent eras where she stopped doing that and barely anyone cared (for a while). Those sorts of personas don't last so long because it's either hard to keep up with it, the public sees you only in one way, or the public judges it as antics rather than authenticity, even if it is and doesn't take you seriously.

Even someone like Madonna had to switch it up in order to maintain her success. Erotica was considered an underperformance and so she came back with ballads. Later Ray of Light was considered her big comeback, and was noticeably different than the more overtly sexual Madonna of the 1980s/early 1990s.

For someone like Britney who had massive fame because of her sexuality, she also had massive scrutiny, and ultimately she has been measured up to the level of bodily perfection and sexual prowess expected of her, ridiculed if she doesn't match it, and now called "crazy" if she continues being openly sexual in her own home, in her own way.

So for Taylor, while this is not the magic ingredient to her success, it just offers her freedom from this whole discussion and scrutiny, and allows her to be the G-Rated popstar that the whole family can enjoy.

She was making songs targeting 5 year old a few years ago!

Most girls who can’t sing sell sex so maybe she just doesn’t want the public to know she has ZEROOOO singing talents!

Btw I never said Taylor is ugly

She’s beautiful and a pretty girl, but she doesn’t sell sex, which is the part of her image this thread is about

Well, let's hope those parents are not homophobics

What's the correlation. Every female artists sells sex, including the ones who can sing as well.

I guess it depends on how much?
U can still be a sex symbol and be hugely successful..u just need to be careful and have more strategy behind it

(the example that was given with Britney for Blackout, she was mostly trying not to give an f (+other factors))

But Taylor is really more accessible this way

especially these days where being sexy, doesn't give much rewards (as maybe it used to)

It's obviously not ONLY about being a sex symbol and a lot of users are forgetting that here.

Ofc it might not have been super different if she was sexier..but it can deffo be a reason to not/be big. (and most importantly - how and when)

you are not aware enough and that makes you completely wrong. taylor swift is 'sexy', if she didnt care to up her 'sexy' image she wouldnt get boob and butt implants.

just because you dont see her as sexy, doesnt mean she doesnt have 'sexy image'.

i agree with your taste, but lots of men and women go nuts for her looks.

Madonna is still to this day the very biggest female artist ever and like top 5 of all time with men included and she was proud and loud about her sexuality/sensuality. I don't think being a sex symbol or not has much impact on how far a female artist's career can go, especially compared to the main factor: the music itself.

Well said. Taylor also isn't sexy. She's naturally dorky and bland.

And that's what makes her sexy.

I wouldn't say that's a factor, she's still pretty much an unreachable beauty for most. Tall skinny blonde blue-eyed lady who looks straight out of a fairytale.

Unreachable....GIRL.Lmao

As a child of a parent who used to “ban” media whenever they saw something they didn’t like, I think Taylor’s image definitely means she isn’t censored as much by protective parents.

I can’t speak for how it helped her in any other way though.

Yes, it makes her more palatable to middle America like Adele.

She has zero sex appeal, so it would have been cringe and a waste of her time. She has focused where she excels, and it certainly isn't sensuality.

The funny thing is she and her team were testing the waters in 2015 to see if she can go that route and it flopped.

Her team brought Maxim magazine back and put her at #1 of the hottest 100.  I remember watching Wendy covering this and asking her audience thoughts on it and nobody was here for it, they pretty much do not find Taylor Swift sexy.

That was  a flop

Taylor Swift and her team quickly backed away from that since they were not getting the response they wanted.

Taylor Swift has no sex appeal anyways
