New York Post: The Idol among TV’s 5 biggest flops in history

HBO canceled “The Idol,” this week, marking another big swing and a miss for TV.

The series — hailing from Sam Levinson of “Euphoria,” fame and starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye — followed a troubled pop princess (Depp) and her relationship with a sleazy nightclub owner and cult leader (Tesfaye).

Critics and audiences alike slammed the show for being “nasty,” and overly salacious, while behind-the-scenes reports pointed to a troubled production.

“The Idol” is far from the first high-profile buzzy show that crashed and burned. Here’s a look at some others.

“Terra Nova” (FOX, 2011, 13 episodes)

“Roadies” (Showtime, 2016, 10 episodes)

“Vinyl” (HBO, 2016, 10 episodes)

“Pan Am” (ABC, 2011, 14 episodes)

“Emerald City” (NBC, 2017, 10 episodes)

Let's discuss TV flops...

People did the most. The show had good moments and acting, it just needed a restructure

It's funny cuz I've mostly seen people wanting to sabotage it :dies:

compared to the others who are just..unknown(?)

I remember watching the first episode and thinking to myself how this show actually has a lot of potential to make interesting statements/commentaries but boy was I wrong :rip: seriously one of the worst shows I've watched.

Abel’s impact to continuously create some of the worst media in recorded history continues!

Most astro turfed backlash of all time. Functionally no different than Euphoria but that gets praised to high heaven.

idk why it's so ok for some here to see women get portrayed this way while also firing the female that was going to give it a better spin

It was so bad, I had to quit after the third episode. I'm also pissed that they removed Elizabeth Berkley's scenes.

i remember when it was being denied it was going to get canceled in the first place lmao

HBO denies report from Page Six claiming ‘The Idol’ won't have a second season: “It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”:rip:

The Idol (a show i haven't watched yet but will in the next week) is the most talked about show since Euphoria Season 2 and you can argue with the wall. :cm:

I do not believe it was a flop for one second.

I couldn't get past episode 1 it was already awful

I remember thinking Terra Nova would be massive but it totally bombed. The budget was crazy, I don’t think we’ll ever see anything of that scope that from network TV again. I do remember it wasn’t great though when I tried to watch it.

Anyway, we need The Idol (Amy Seimetz’s Version). It is so obvious that it would have been way better and would’ve actually given us the proper pop girl fantasy

Watch her masterpiece, The Girlfriend Experience.

I think Abel should stick to the music. Not every artist can seamlessly transition to acting. Only a select few and he isn't one of them.

This is simply not true, for Euphoria S1 at least. Season 2 absolutely, but everyone hated S2. Zendaya’s character does a lot to anchor that show to reality.

Y’all should check out this old Canadian show called Instant Star. It was essentially about an alt pop girl who wins a singing competition and her struggles within the industry. It was pretty good with great music.

The Idol was a comedic parody at best.
