Both artists have same problem on being trapped on stereotypical sound and persona

After their debut album, both commercial performances are comparable

X and OOTB are their first major breakthrough on mainstream Pop, followed by their peak, Divide and Teenage Dream, and the extension of the era's success, No. 6 Collaboration Project and Teenage Dream : Complete Confection

The following eras slowed them, even though they still manage to get hits, and finally their major slump with Substract and Witness

ed sheeran still big streamed songs are from 2014 to 2017 ... song from the other projects were just threw on people mouth and they forget about it (smash global song i don't care with bieber doing 100K daily)

Ed could NEVER create a pop magnum opus like TD or PRISM, he doesn’t have the range to create a OOTB, and would never take the risk to create a Witness (his most daring creative risk was the dollar store eye look from Bad Habits…). 
 

He does have the bigger career (the less impressive male answer to Adele), but Katy has Thinking of You so she wins.
