I was already gutted when this first came to light but every subsequent revelation that comes out of this situation just makes the feeling even worse (particularly the double down with the pinned comment). This was a woman who built her brand on queer allyship, sounds, and aesthetics for decades only to turn around and do this. Like she dedicated an entire song to Paris is Burning???? What the **** happened????? It's honestly makes me reflect on and question the way I interact with non-queer female artists as a queer fan, cause if this can happen with someone like Roísín, nobody is safe. Horrifically disappointing

Except Roisin was clearly far down the anti-science rabbit hole that the entire discussion that started this was her making such comments and her own friends on her personal Facebook trying to engage with her that she may have been misinformed by people who wish to frame gender affirming care as greater in harm than true. 

 

In response to this, she branded a "BIG PHARMA IS BEHIND THIS" conspiracy that veered into well known TERF talking points. When fans asked her to clarify her stance, after the exchange became public, she couldn't even give people a straight forward answer and instead platformed an account that called trans people groomers and pinned a comment from said user accusing trans people of being child abusers and claiming that "big pharma is transing our gay youth and killing them". 

 

No one made this person a reactionary. They've been so clearly inundated with this rhetoric and views and allowing them to fester that she's an expert in the lingo and anti-scientific misinformation. 

 

Why are her feelings and ego more important than asking her to not stop medical disinformation? ATRL is hosted in the US and I am an American and libel laws are thankfully not like they are in the UK so I will make the facts very fuckiing clear:

Roisin Murphy does not display an ounce of intelligence or understanding about gender affirming care and thus appears wildly ignorant to reality.

Do queer people ~create~ homophobes for rightfully calling people who say “I just think marriage should be between a man and a woman like god intended!” homophobic? No of course not, those people ARE homophobic. Whether they decide to dig their heels in even farther is their onus and fault, not queer people.

 

So why is this changed for you with trans individuals? The statement you gave as an example: “I don’t believe children should medically transition. Being a legal adult with a mostly developed brain to minimize the risk of regret should be a bare minimum requirement” IS transphobic because it does not uphold any actual medical or scientific consensus and is purely based on THEIR NEGATIVE FEELINGS ABOUT TRANS PEOPLE. Liking some trans people is not a get out of jail free card, just like saying you have a black friend does not mean you aren’t racist. Denying gender-affirming care to trans children IS transphobia, you are directly contributing to the suffering of trans individuals based on your unsubstantiated beliefs and forcing those onto trans people. The ONLY people who should be involved in the medical decision making of a child, trans or otherwise, is them, their parents, and their physician. And as we have already gone over as nauseum, the ~rates of regret~ that y’all like to parade out is literally one of the lowest rates for nearly all medical interventions. Like, including things like LASIK surgery and veneers that are advertised on billboards.
