Summer song can be hard to define sometimes based on some songs that were hits during summer

So I'm gonna be a fair fairy and not sabotage anyone like that!

For my rankings I took a page out of the Diversity book and scored 5 pts. for how much the song fits and 5 pts. for how much I like it.

Without further ado:

 

 

@Julia Fox Shakira - Loca

This marimba beat and trumpets is quite the Caribbean salsa dream, so I totally get the summer holiday vibe. The song is good but a bit inessential!

 

@khalyan Jessica Simpson - Irresistible

It's time to come clean and admit I've never heard a single Jessica Simpson song and this one, straight out of early Britney's recycling bin, is not a good look. I guess I could hear it playing in summer radio 20 years ago, but it's so faceless/bland/dated that if it came up nowadays I'd change radio stations quick.

 

@D e v o n Katy Perry - California Gurls

Fits the theme to a T. The secret to a perfect summer song is etiher a tropical influence or the kind of guitar that plays here, so a homerun for you! Unfortunately, it's always been my least favorite in Teenage Dream's extremely notable run of singles (okay, Part of Pee is worse), but it's still good, and I'm sure you're gonna go #1.

 

@fiercE P!nk - Get This Party Started

July house party and the vibes are getting woozy, I find it to be a great pick in that respect. The song is amazing and a classic, so kudos to that. Great round for you!

 

@Insanity Nick Jonas - Teacher

The only summery thing is that guitar and it's a bit lowkey isn't it? I wouldn't necessarily associate this with being a summer jam elsewhere. I HATE his voice in the first verse, but from then on, it's a cute track.

 

@Born to Run Billie Eilish - Bad Guy

It's difficult with Billie since her music tends to be ooky spooky and very insular, but I feel that lyrically that carries this song towards a bit of hot girl summer attitude, and I mean, being a worldwide smash four years ago definitely helps associate it with the season. There's clearer summer songs in this round, but this is an 11/10 song so like, you're definitely not doing bad at all!

Ughhhh this is such a classique and hot girl summer coded. Excellent round for you!

 

@ZORBIT Tinashe - Superlove

It skews low on the scale of energy and thus it's a little of a debatable summer pick for me. The song is awesome though.

 

@Queen. Nicki Minaj - Starships

Fits the theme like a latex glove. It's a boosted up beach frenzy overflowing with early (major label) Nicki's uncontainable energy, and call it nostalgia, but this still knocks HARD. Excellent round for you!

 

@PoKiTaurus Madonna - Beautiful Stranger

Everyone else has highlighted how and why this choice is extremely odd, so let me say something different and let you know I have a soft spot for this one because in the MCU (Madonna Cinematic Universe) timeline, I was born within a week of the video being filmed.

 

@blackoutbaby Rihanna - SOS

It's a dark bop but somehow still has that summery association. One of her best singles, too.

 

@dejmieeen Natalia Nykiel - Error

Discounting the language barrier, this only sounds faintly summery in the way of its electronic Clean Bandit-esque sound. But it falls on the boring side for sure.
