KELLY:

The pose, and Kelly's facial expression, show her being a badass, possibly sick and tired of her flop man. Back to the setting, this photoshoot is for My December, an album she fully wrote herself. In the photo, this is nicely depicted, but with the room being messy and disorganized, and the papers flying everywhere, you can tell she was extremely angry while working on this album. The viewer can imagine Kelly threw the papers she wrote on all over the place, as she got more emotional with her writing.

Being probably Kelly at her angriest, Never Again displays our girl dragging a cheater through the mud. Kelly is showing rage throughout the entire song, making sure her ex-man will keep on thinking about her after the mistake he made. Various displays of her man being shallow are also displayed in the song ("Give me that Sunday school answer"). Kelly is certain she does not want to have anything to do with this man anymore, as she declares it in the bridge of the song.

I chose this photo for joy, because I wanted to convey the joy motherhood can bring. Rihanna breastfeeding in the photo really brings to life the entire experience of motherhood, as well. Bringing life into this world, and being able to nurture that life is the epitome of a joyful experience.

 

CIARA:

The joy of pregnancy and motherhood. For a caring mother with a loving husband, few things spark more joy than bringing new life into this world. Ciara does not shy away from showing off this love, while still making public appearances. Donning a dress to show off her pregnant body, she is doing amazing work for pregnancy PR.

As for the song, Diamonds literally talks about shining bright and finding beauty in happy relationships. Two people together, falling in love and becoming one, is a great example of joy. The lyrics also literally describe happiness: "Find light in the beautiful sea, I choose to be happy
You and I, you and I, we're like diamonds in the sky."

 

CIARA:

"Thinkin Bout You'' hits all the right notes for a joyous song. The upbeat nature of it immediately tells you that this is going to be a cheerful song. Throughout the song, Ciara expresses her glee and fondness for this man. The catchy chorus and outro reinforces that she's basically living on cloud nine all day thinking about him.

I've chosen this photo to represent "sadness" because well does it get any sadder than an old human resources woman working 9 to 5, feeling miserable, then going home to an alcoholic husband, trapped in a loveless marriage. She's thinking about how her two sons have moved out and won't return her calls, she's just over it. To me this pic evokes all that, very sad.

The repetition of "dream about you" emphasizes her ongoing longing for them. This section conveys the depth of her emotions and the lasting impact this person had on her.

Menstruation has always been painted disgusting by strokes of patriarchy. In collaboration with the talented Sannwald, ROSALÍA, a champion of feminism, reclaims menstrual blood as a display of power. With her naked body painted with glitterized blood from living women of all ages, the MOTOMAMI creator confidently flaunts the beauty of reclaiming the narrative. Standing tall, eyes smized, the feminista points down to prisoners of patriarchy, "Disgusting is liberation."

 

TINASHE:

Disgust is the natural response to unpleasant sights and as little do most know, it's one of the dominant emotions hardwired to your stomach, your second brain! Tinashe took the literal Disgusting approach of conveying this core survival emotion with being covered in Gastric Juice (slime). She portrays our body's brewing chemical response when we see some rotting food, certain bodily fluids, or small critters; some of our many biological fears. Disgust has evolved us to avoid many diverse factors that we believe will cause one harm!

SONG EXPLANATION

ROSALIA:

"Hurt me: An analysis of self-loathing as a form of self-disgust" ("Dolerme" by ROSALÍA as interpreted by ATRL's ROSALÍA, Kylie Verzosa)

 

"Dolerme" portrays a somber type of disgust through its lyrics and sound. In this debut promotional single of ROSALÍA, the singer laments in the introductory verse, "For all those times I put myself second, and I changed what I wanted for what you wanted." The lyrics portray a person who regrets the choices she made in a previous romance, consequently implying being disgusted by these decisions. The melancholic tone complements this mood set by the singer. This sound persists upto  the outro of the song to show the pervading disgust ROSALÍA feels as she commits to her destructive fleeting reconciliation with her past lover.

 

 

TINASHE:

Predominantly sung by Tinashe, "All My Friends" lyrics portray the deeper darker, more problematic side of disgust that would interfere with one's life, especially as an adult. Tinashe & Chance the Rapper express self disgust from wasting away their Friday Night's in toxic club culture by excessive partying & substance abuse. Surrounding yourself with red flags, AMF captures the sense of being disillusioned & dissatisfied with one's current state of mind when surrounded with such negativity. If left untreated, Self-disgust will snowball into multiple dysfunctional thoughts & negative or harmful situations!

FKA:

My take on this photo is the fear of vulnerabilty. The limbs piercing through, a violation of her persona, her body and her integrity. The defeatist pose, her hands and nudeness highlights her unwilling coercion by others to change herself, and silencing or twisting her words like the hand in her mouth suggests. When I look at her expression, a subtle but chilling fear strikes back at me.

 

MADONNA:

This picture is taken from the music video for Take A Bow, moments after her lover physically abuses her off-camera. She is both physically and mentally trapped in a corner, trying to hide herself from him like a girl who doesn’t know what to do because she’s never faced such domestic abuse before. By her side is religious imagery, showcasing how in bad times, Madonna leans to religion for protection.

SONG EXPLANATION

FKA:

This song talks about irrational fears that FKA had from the time she used to be an IT dancer, to deciding to make a career switch into musician/singer/producer. For every positive remark she has for herself ("Nineteen, I see / A body that can move the hardest in the room") double doubts follow ("Got all eyes on you now / What you gonna do?" "You don't stand a chance stop acting like you can"). The sound pulls from a distorted yet rhythmic soundscape with intense beat peaks, like anxiety, and ending slowed down, like being paralyzed by fear and uncertainty.

 

MADONNA:

Justify My Love is an expression of Madonna’s freedom from fear, which evokes fear in her lover. She confronts him upfront: “Tell me your fears, are you scared? Tell me your stories, I'm not afraid of who you are”, “So now what?”, “What are you gonna do?”. The instrumental is tense, evoking the fear her lover is facing. Her voice echoes as if she is a succubus inside his mind.
