Rolling Stone: "How Dr. Luke staged a comeback in the shadows"

I really hope Kesha gets a chance to tell her full story, the world needs to know and be reminded what a monster he is, it’s sad how many just seemed to forget and some even forgive.

It’s interesting to read how his Prescription Records execs, producers and writers have infiltrated a lot of writing & production rooms in the industry, with him acting more as an overseer.

He sounds horrible & clearly on an ego trip, that extends beyond just arrogance, but actual malice. With or without Kesha’s case, his reputation would’ve taken a hit eventually, based on these character testimonies.

How one doesn’t consider that your artists have a much larger and louder, public platform than you, regardless of how much pull you may have behind the scenes, is beyond me.

Sadly she never will be able to do it (at least in her own words). Dr. Luke made her sign on their final agreement to never talk about the case or him again.

hate the guy, but this is like the perfect definition of "talent always wins". Despite his history, seems like artists still go to him. :dies:

How dense can you be? This is the definition of privileged/powerful white men always win lol he's not even that talented his production is pretty much recycling the same **** over and over again

To be fair, we don’t know what the terms of the settlement are. It‘s possible that NDAs are involved, but we don’t know it for sure.

You can support Kesha and not make up total bull.

Dr Luke seems to be a residing producer for Republic Records. He will be working on lots of things already.

I'd like further unpacking of their notion of new hip-hop artists being more willing to work with him.

Also, he's never going to be out front executive producing an artist he built from the ground up from opening track to closing track on an album ever again.

I guess you could argue his companies having so much influence and still thriving are still at the same level of "victory", but that's subjective.

What's interesting is that the beats he sold to people like Saweetie and Tay Money were part of bundle deals for multiple deals, in a BOGO style, knowing that these were still largely newish artists with very little budget. It's still a sign he was and somewhat still is desperate.

A lot of the interactions on social media (studio clips, BTS videos) also largely showed a lot of the female rappers only dealing with Lunchmoney Lewis, who has basically been pushing Luke's productions for him.

People forget he has long been criticized since like... the start of his career for being an *******.

  • He was known as a sleazy drug dealer selling coke to artists on the set of SNL back in 2003.
  • Kelly Clarkson fans were complaining about him in 2004 for talking **** about her on her own fan forums and arguing with her fans, saying she was a liar for claiming to have asked for SUBG to be rockier. He was even offering to call fans up and play them what he claimed was the original demo to "prove" Kelly was a liar.
  • P!nk stopped working with him after just 1 album after finding out he re-used beats in 2006. Butch Walker wrote about this in his book that came out before anything with Kesha.
  • In the same Butch Walker book, he's described as demanding Avril Lavigne stop being friends with Butch and ends up stealing the concept for a song Avril and Butch were working on that would sample Hey Mickey for The Best Damn Thing in 2007.
  • He again ended up on Kelly's team's radar when finding out he was talking **** about her on Pulse Music Board, trash talking Never Again and saying she would flop by not returning to work with him (he was previously spending his days ****-talking Stupid Girls by P!nk and hyping up U + Ur Hand and insulting P!nk for demanding too much control over her music with Try This and how she needs him to save her career.).

  • His weird hate vendetta against Kelly continues on for another 2 years with Cl*ve Davis bringing Luke back for Kelly's next album in 2009, with the original lyrics to "My Life Would Suck Without You" being weird and vulgar and Kelly having a breakdown over having to record it, eventually telling RCA she'd only record it if they allowed her and Claude Kelly to rewrite parts of it and if she didn't have to be in the studio at the same time as Luke.

Like we're not even in the 2010s yet and 2 of the 4 MPGs he had produced hits for already hated him! :deadbanana4:

I think he fat shamed Kelly Clarkson as well during my life would suck without you

He was basically degrading and thought she, as the female singer, should be quiet and let the men, him and Max, craft the songs. This was from Kelly's unsealed deposition in the defamation case that was unsealed back in 2018:

Quote

The original song that was sent to me was such a turd, I didn't -- it wasn't what you hear now. And I had to work on [My Life Would Suck Without You] myself. And I just didn't take credit because I don't want my name near his. That's how much I dislike him. So I don't know who the other writers are. I don't even look at the songwriter credit. I kind of pretend that didn't happen in my life.

Quote

So the rest of the time you worked with Claude Kelly?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my management made that clear too like to be like, you know, we're all -- she is going to be -- everybody was nice. No one was rude, no one was -- you know, other than being blunt when someone asked me what I thought of him.

Quote

And Dr. Luke attempted to come up. He came up and said, "hey, you know, I don't know like what the problem is, you know, between us." And I just cut him off and said, "man, you know exactly what the problem is between us. You know, like things that have gone down behind the scenes." And, you know, via my label, via people telling me at my label like things he said and just his way of like having arguments with my fans and having like just his person. Like I was like, "you know I don't like you. And it's cool like I don't have to like you, you don't have to like me. There's plenty of people in the world like and, you know, I hope you're successful in your ventures. I'm going to be successful in mine. We don't have to work together. You know why I'm here; I have to be." I was like so there's no -- I'm like, "I'm not mad about it, I'm not angry, I just don't want you in my life."

Quote

Have you ever seen Dr. Luke be upset with anyone?

He is very like sneaky with it. Like he is very like, like I said, just kind of dismissive and belittling and, you know, throw out jabs like it's that kind of thing.

Quote

I have heard, I think it's P!nk and I have heard [she] like doesn't like working with him. I have been told. I was not told this via P!nk. I was told via my label because they're like, you know, we're having a hard time with him working with other people. And then they said, actually almost every female at our label doesn't like working with him.

Quote

In general, I don't know anyone that likes him.

Does that include managers and artists?

And producers and songwriters, but I don't know everybody, so...

There's plenty of producers that can do what he does and even better that's a fact

ugh I just want Kesha to be happy and I want her to find full justice at the end of the day :cries: she’s such an amazing, talented, beautiful person and Dr. Luke deserves all backlash he could possibly get. I want her to be able to tell more of her story, of course once she’s comfortable enough to

the comments Kelly has made about him also make me so depressed. she NEVER deserves any of that. she’s the sweetest, most beautiful person and I hate how the industry has treated her

Kelly and Kesha out-talent, out-smart, and out-class him any day of the week and he should be permanently blacklisted

hollywood is the industry of evil, selfish, people.. people who would do anything to get where they want no matter how many people they hurt or how how many abusers they support in the process.. that's why abusers always thrive in hollywood

I don't think she's ever working with him again. She has so much to lose from it and little to win. Rolling Stone was more saying that she has an album coming and it could be an opportunity to work together but I don't see it happening.

She wants to come back in a good light/full force and working with him would be like starting with the left foot.

she won’t work with luke or say anything publicly. shes been totally mute for years, i don’t think she’ll even spill when shes old.

she might work with his associates tho

The list is insane :deadbanana2:

Kelly actually told RCA she'd only record it if Claude Kelly could be there too, she still sadly had to be there with Luke when she recorded it.  She talked about it in her deposition:

'He walked up to me, and I was standing with my manager Narville Blackstock, not to be confused with my husband, who is also named Narville, but he goes by Brandon. He is my father-in-law, it's very incestual. But he was standing next to me, my manager, we were talking. And Dr Luke attempted to come up, or he didn't attempt. I was like so there's no -- I'm like, "I'm not mad about it, I'm not angry, I just don't want you in my life." So... '

When asked how Dr Luke responded to that, Clarkson recalled: 'He said, I mean, well, he was in disbelief, which is pure Dr Luke fashion when he does something that isn't nice. And then is like "what" and he just kind of chuckled and laughed and walked off.'

Like she said in an another interview, if there are that many people that don't like you....something is off.

People can read this article and still think Kesha wasn't telling the truth about him? He's basically a part-time music producer, part-time abuser of women.
