“Taylor doesn’t bring anything new to the table”. But do most popstars bring?

I feel like most popstar start trends, influence and inspire other artists and make things popular and mainstream (Taylor has done it all).

But there are very few who are really inventive that created new things that have never been done.

What did they bring that Madonna and Lana Del Rey didn’t before?

She kinda just built her own style and evolved with it and stayed in her lane

Not every popstar has to be this revolutionary visionary that changes the industry.

One of the main reasons she’s close the biggest musician in number all time is because of that.

She knows her market, feeds it, and waters it for growth.

Also most popstars these days can’t even revolutionize the industry since everything has been done already.

This whole genre of conversation is tiresome.

It always goes I like [X] artist so they had a big influence on music unlike [Y] artist I do not like.

In reality, every artist that gets frequently talked about on this site has had an outsized influence on music and you just look silly trying to argue otherwise.

I'm gonna be fair and say that I think she brings storytelling and sensory details / specific names and places in her songwriting. Many popstars in the early 2010s had albums that were full of rejected singles and filler, but it seemed like she actually put a ton of effort into her album tracks. So it makes sense that people still revisit albums like Red after a long time.

I don't know the last time a popstar introduced a new and innovative sound tbh....

Taylor is the typical girl next door. Nothing wrong about that and I don’t think anyone expect her to bring something new or different.

Trends are a reflection of society.

These days, we are surrounded by environmental issues, inflation and war -> depressive, intro-spective artists like Billie, Taylor and Lana benefit immensely from it.

In the late 90s, everyone was full of hope and excitement for the Millennium -> artists Britney, BSB, Nsync and happy music dominated.

Its very simple and mainstream artists usually go with the flow and rarely dare to innovate

Honestly she tried to especially with rep but people just want her to release victim blaming songs and songs about her exes.

If it ain’t broke, it don’t need to be fixed.

Most of them brought something new - at least the big ones. Madonna, MJ, Prince, Beyonce, Gaga and even Katy Perry have their own things they have brought. Taylor just feels like rehashed Teenage Dream/Prism stuff mixed with her pop country persona which had been done by female country artists before her. She doesn't bring anything to the table.

Literal lies.

Eras tour has already changed major tours: Beyonce, Jonas Bros both now have massive set lists and multiple hour-long concerts.

You're welcome, Hive and Bros.

No one listens to Taylor and thinks of Teenage Dream or Prism :skull: You snuck Katy in and thought we wouldn't notice

Despite of what stan world and media thinks, the GP doesn't care too much if someone is bringing something 'new' to the table. People just want to enjoy music most of the time, it doesn't matter if the sound is innovative or not, as long as it connects it's fine :giraffe:

What left is there to bring?

She's made a lane for herself and people will study it in the future.

Her female predecessors in popular music brought new stuff to the table.

Aretha

Judy

Barbra

Cher

Diana

Donna

Dolly

Cyndi

Madonna

Gloria Estefan

Whitney

Mariah

Alanis

Shania

Britney

Shakira

Beyonce

Rihanna

Gaga

Billie

A whole bunch of women were not listed as every artist does not have to bring something new to the table. At least with Taylor she built a solid foundation for sustainability.

Everyone acknowledges Lana Del Rey as the OG prototype of 'Sad Girl Pop' but after Billie, there was an imminent wave of artists who emulated not just her delicate tone but baggy aesthetics into their music and artistry; while Lana's influence shaped the decade of music through a gradual process, forming inspiration for artists like Lorde, Billie, and so, but you can see how different the artists are when they are inspired by Lana versus Billie.

Taylor IS influential though. Idk how anyone can deny that.

Sure her music is on the safe side, but she 100% helped influence the new wave of in singer-singer writer focused pop girls where diary-esque confessional type songs are the main draw. Olivia, Sabrina, Halsey, Billie, her bff Selena, Etc. all clearly show Taylor influence.

Lol, Taylor already wrote better pop songs on her own (Love Story, Spark Fly, Enchanted, etc.) way before than those writers camp songs you think are influential to her. Delusional at its finest.

I feel like big, impactful artists with decades of success and legacy like Madonna or Beyoncé definitely brought something new to the table, but no, not every artist has to be an innovator. In fact, I would argue that part of the reason for Taylor's success is that she's rather easily palatable and continues to give her fans exactly what she knows they want and expect from her. She knows what works for her and she stays in that lane. She wouldn't be selling those kind of numbers if she, for example, pulled an Erotica or a Ray Of Light out of the blue like Madonna did.

Beyoncé already had multiple hour long set lists with Formation World Tour, On The Run Tour and On The Run II Tour. Even with Homecoming, though that was just two shows. Renaissance World Tour has less songs on the setlist than Formation World Tour had. And the Renaissance World Tour was planned way before Eras Tour started. Beyoncé wouldn’t wait for Taylor to start her tour and than plan out her whole tour and rehearse it in just two months :rip:

Bey’s wasn’t influenced by Eras, the show is 2 hours like any other established act but she does a 20-30 “opening act set” herself, branding herself as the opening act and the main show.

Jonas Brothers were absolutely influenced by Eras though, their show is divided by album and actually do nearly 70 songs.
