base talk Does “separating art from the artist” apply to Nicki Minaj?

Nicki Minaj has constantly and proudly associated with and defended predators throughout her career (6ix9ine, Roman Polanski, Dr Luke, Kenneth Petty and the list goes on) and is morally corrupt altogether, more than any of our faves.

 

Unfortunately, i can’t make the music not bop and i’m looking forward to Pink Friday 2. Is anyone else in the same dilemma?

 

Does supporting her music mean that the money she earns will potentially be used to get Kenneth Petty off the sex-offender’s registry? Will it be used to intimidate his victim?

 

Can we seperate the art from the artist in this situation or should she be boycotted?

It's sad too because performative outrage is a barrier to real accountability for the actual perpetrators.  Mr Petty can use the Nicki hate train for plausible deniability when in reality he should be in prison.

She's honestly just too vile of a human being that people are no longer shocked when she does something messy, and some don't care in the first place, so they just smile and nod then go back to bopping. She has a cult like mentality that further spreads her toxicity and is surrounded by brainwashed stans that boost her ego. The industry is full of problematic people and I am usually against blaming women for problematic men's doings but Nicki goes literally out of her way to associate herself with them and defend them on multiple occasions. The things The Pettys have done to Jennifer Hough are inexcusable.

 

Also, she is obviously a good rapper but her music is not even that great anymore. The last time she truly served was years ago which is sad because I believe that she has it in her to drop a groundbreaking rap album. She's her worst enemy.

I don't really care tbh. Why should I let the behaviour of the artist affect my enjoyment of their music? Especially if I have memories with and became fond of that music before their problematic behaviour came to light?

 

I find it hard to look past problematic lyrics though. I remember this one song I liked and then later found out it was an anti-abortion song, all I could think about while listening to it was abortion so I had to delete it 

 

Ngl there's a touch of irony in this all cause the gays that drag artists like Nicki etc. are also probably the same ones who stay perched for Azealia

Nicki is just as guilty as the predators she keeps around her and defends and brags about defending. Everyone's fave has had a bad man around them at some point but only Nicki is like this. The predators she keeps around her are a reflection of her.

Unpopular opinion I guess but all of us would separate the art from the artist for our faves (unless if she committed a crime). While she is associated with a sex offender, that doesnt make her a criminal (yet). 

Besides, I didnt know music and pop culture had to be so moralist. Two literal pedophiles are considered the kings of pop and rock and no one bats an eye irl. Music in itself kind of attracts depravity (which is why religious nuts hate it) but thats the point of its enduring power: it reflects our lives, our dreams and fantasies, dirty or not.
